Today we have Dick Dale w/Dusty Watson on drums doing a variation of Dust Devil. As you may know Dick has been going through chemo and radiation in preperation for an operation to remove a rectal tumor. He's doing very well but still has a long road ahead. Same issue struck him when he was in his 20's ..at that time he was not expected to pull through ..Jimi wrote the line "you'll never hear surf music again" for Third Stone From The Sun ..Jimi was mistaken then an we expect will be again...

Sorry I got in the thread late. "Surf Rider" was the first song I was taught by a professional teacher. He asked me what kind of guitar music I liked. I was only about ten and the only guitar music I could think of was surf, being from the beach in southern California. Thus the lesson. I was shocked when it resurfaced on Pulp Fiction. Wish I still had that old Silvertone archtop......

Welcome "on board" Mike! The 1960's Lively Ones were a step ahead of most other surf bands of that era (first wave). They did put on a "lively" show with Jim the lead guitarist jumping up on a pair of dual showman stacks for his Rumble solo.

Sorry it's taken me so long to get to this part of the forum, George. Surf music was the beginning for me and guitars. I look forward to posting more!

For those that have been following the posts re: Dick Dale's battle with cancer. Dick is back home now resting and is cancer free. Has a road to travel yet before he can hit the waves and the road again but he's up for the task no doubt about it. DD starts his shows (as this video shows) playing off stage..ya hear/feel him (loud) before ya see him...Nitro!

Cool, George! Couldn't help buy notice that the bass player was playing a Wal MK1 bass. I knew that sound was familiar.

Middle Eastern and Latin tonalities played a big part in first wave surf music. Again, Dick Dale first used these styles in some of his songs (Miserlou, The Victor (Middle Eastern) Spanish Kiss, Esperanza (Spanish). Today we feature two killer first wave bands...first The Pharos doing Pintor and then The Sentinels doing their classic Latin'ia...not much video action on these but worth a listen...next time we'll do some w/Middle Eastern flavors...

Jon and The Nightriders blazed the trail of instro surf's second wave. John Blair is also a historian of the music and wrote "the" book on the history of the style. Today's his birthday so....
