Where's Ed when we need him???

I was one month shy of 11 and had knwn about them before that also. I still remember watching the shows and my father saying "They're not playing those guitars" haha! They totally changed my life, I became obsessed with them, also wanted to play that "humming guitar" that Paul played. They were probably the most important thing in my life (without my realizing it) until that terrible day in 1970, seemed like a part of my life was gone, I was 17 or 18. It had been a rumor for a while that they were breaking up, was kind of anticlimactic when it was finally announced. They had been with me all through my teen years which seemed like an eternity to me back then. It was the kind of thing where you thought they'd just always be there, you took it for granted. I think most people my age would agree that The Beatles were a big part of our lives back then.

Yup. 1970 was a hard, hard year. The Beatles broke up, Jimi died, Janis died,...I felt rather lost.

Just spent this past weekend(Monday public holiday) with my family at a coastal town on the south-east Victorian peninsula! I hadn't been camping for years , so it was a pleasant surprise to find caravan parks have improved out-of-sight since i was a kid!
Anyway, to make a long story short, the park,in Inverloch, had piped music playing through the day,tuned to a local classic music station!
Suddenly the very familiar opening bars of "I want to hold your hand!" chimed through the speakers! My 4 y.o. son, Kieran, screamed out "The Beatles daddy, it's The Beatles!" He then started singing along!(He calls it "The Hand Song". I was a 4 y.o back in 1964 when i first heard that song,and i remember exactly the same excitement!
Moral:- We train them young down here!
(Kieran has also taken a liking to my 350 Liverpool!)

I was 4 also and I do remember parts of that night. I was allowed to stay up and watch the show, with my Mom who was very exited to see them. I also know that seeing the Beatles that night (along with my young passion fo rthe Ventures) had an enormous impact on me to learn music and to play the guitar. I took my first private lesson on my 5th birthday (because they wouldn't take you until you were 5!) but got my first guitar (a Mansfield acoustic) in July 1964. I was a Harrison fan from this show onward. However, I must admit that my first thoughts of electric guitars were for a Gretsch, not a Ric.

How cool that Kieran, at 4 years old, was so exited about hearing the Beatles 44 years later.

That was nearly 20 years before my time, but if it wasn't for the Beatles I would be playing guitar or writing music. The Beatles Anthology is what did it for me. They changed my life musically. I've been raising my nephew, and he's been exposed to the Beatles since before he was born. He's two now, and his first word was Beatles. They're also the only people he recognizes besides family members. I hope to make him a lifelong fan like the rest of us.

I was 11. I Remember it well. I switched immediately from accordian lessons to guitar lessons. Parents hated them....said the music was noise and they had hair like girls.

Back then almost every family watched Ed Sullivan together on sunday night.

Here's a trivia question....this was back in the era of 3 or 4 channels most places I think..I recall in Philly it was Chs 3, 6 & 10--NBC, ABC and CBS respectively, and I think Ch 12, PBS. Does anyone know what was competing with Sullivan on Sunday nights back then?

Sullivan would have probably liked to have had the Beatles appear on his show as much as this S Korean band. They appeared over 20 something times. They were one of Ed's favorites...and big Rick users, as shown in the photo.

The back half was occupied by "Arrest and Trial," kind of a '60s "Law and Order" with Chuck Connors (The Rifleman).
NBC had Walt Disney's "Wonderful World of Color" and "Grindl," which starred Imogene Coca of Sid Caesar fame.

We never changed the channel to see what else was on...even during the maddening topo gigio parts. There were no remotes...well there was zenith space commander, but we didn't have one.
