Control layout extravaganza shenanigans!

I'd go with the five knob layout you like but move the two lower controls a bit further away from the top three, a bit closer to the body edge. This will give more "breathing" room and look better aesthetically.

Right, and take away some of the W look to that layout. More of the 4 control "parallelogram" layout of a Rick with the 5th knob in line.jps wrote:I'd go with the five knob layout you like but move the two lower controls a bit further away from the top three, a bit closer to the body edge. I decided on the 5 control layout and ordered the preamp today. Finally selling the Wal freed up the cash for parts. Now to just get my drill and router warmed up.
Re: Control layout extravaganza shenanigans!
You could go with the 4 control layout and use the switch as a master mute. Not to throw any more possibilities into the pot!

...no pun intended, of course...

Didn't I get a set of stacked pots from you...incubus2432 wrote:After some more research and feedback I've decided to go with the 5 control model AND the layout mentioned above has grown on me enough that I feel comfortable with the conversion. I'll probably order the harness later this week and break out the drill/router soon after that (depending on my schedule).
Thanks for the opinions BTW.
BTW congrats on unloading the Wal...I guess...

I thought of that. I was actually leaning that way so it would have more of a 4003 look to it but decided against it. When playing I sometimes do quick tweaks to the volume or tone and on the 4 control setup those controls would be stacked and with my ham hands that might be troublesome. Typically I'm a "set it and forget it" kinda guy but after playing with the various tones so much on the Wal I've found my tweaking side coming out more and more.jps wrote:You could go with the 4 control layout and use the switch as a master mute. Yep ya' did!
I would have liked to have kept the Wal but getting rid of it was the best move (IMO). The more I've looked into the ACG preamp I'm getting the more I'm sure I'll have all the useable tone variation I want in Laredo....which was where the Wal excelled. The only downside is the loss of the 5th string but in my current situation it isn't that big of a deal and if it becomes an issue I'll deal with it then.
Don't mind Jeff......he cracks himself up!jingle_jangle wrote:...no pun intended, of course...![]()

Re: Control layout extravaganza shenanigans!
My problem is I set it then forget it...years back, when the 4001 was my main bass I tweaked all the time...asked band mates their opinion...
Then I went to the J Bass, and it's buzzy stock PU's that worked best all out. I became a one sound guy.
Even the Laredo in it's stock configuration was fairly flexible, and I'd have the issue of maybe switching to just the neck PU for a tune, and forgetting it. Then I'd be in the middle of some disco type tune (like Brickhouse) wondering where the cut went, and remember that I set it to thump 4 songs earlier for "Ticket to Ride"...
I'm still fighting that tendancy with the stacked pots. Wondeful array of tones, I just have to remember to take advantage of them...
