1960’s Rickenbacker bass history is amazing and this debate is the most fun I have had in a long while. I am filming with Francis Ford Coppola in Buenos and I am thrilled to be doing so, Still every chance I get I check this thread

Say hi to Francis from his fellow obsessive-compulsives.

Here's my untouched Feb '69 routes for comparison.

I may have already posted this, but I don't feel like going back through to check.

Could be. My guess is it was a 4000 and someone did the "4001S" conversion on there own. Much like I'm doing (but with out the routes).wints wrote:Thanks John,
That's certainly looks like a 67 FG, very distinctive, and nothing like my Dec 68 deluxe. I had a feeling it might be...![]()
It has the two channels, like Ken.S's old 67 "S" IIRC, which resides with Vincent now. That rout looks original, but someone may have scored it a little deeper to fit a later, longer pole toaster.
You could possibly think this was a fairly complete bass from 67, (although it appears to be wearing post 68 Grovers) and hanging around. Finally, in 68 someone ordered one, and this is the end product.
Possibly...

Hmm, I would tend to believe that as well.
Although it is still possible IMO that the FG bass had the p/up added at the factory; Some models of instruments certainly did not end up as what they were intended to be at the start of construction. An example of this would be many of the 370/12s you see in the 60s....many of these simply were 360/12s that had a middle p/up added to fulfill an order.
Some of the handywork that shows bare wood after the finish was applied could have been done during assembly at the plant...sometimes the guts wouldn't fit properly in what was routed, and some small finish work was needed to complete assembly...
I think the same logic applies to later model 4001-S basses, maybe even some 60's models.

How does the old saw go...If you can remember the '60's RMs, then they weren't really there.seyesbass wrote:There has been a lot of mention of 1964 but I am sure basses like DH163 were made in 1963 werent they?
Vince and Wints..between us we have seen a few RMs but out of over 150 it begs the question I have asked many times...Where are all the others?
Re: what is the most expensive ric bass? rarest ric bass?
Andy: They were sent to me by a prospective buyer here in the US If I'm remembering right; I was getting this one confused with the one our friend in Spain bought not long ago ( a '67).
And, I was sent pics of a Mapleglo example a while back, and I can't find those pics (D'oh)....

Vince, glad you're in "Tetro"...this one looks GREAT, very exciting.
Somehow, some way, on SOME project or other, you should slip a fine old 1960's Rickenbacker bass into a scene...
