Does it say something else, or is the ROS script just worn off? I have at least one RIC on which most of the jackplate script is worn off.

The black writing is completely scratched off of the jackplate on my '72 ... or appears to be, until I take a picture. It shows up in pictures, but not visible to the naked eye. Creepy!

it has the serial number

B1 9586

here is a photo

I can see any evidence of a worn off ROS

the silver stuff is some kind of paint, that scrapes off, but I wanna use 0000 steel wool not to scratch the chrome......

I was going to ask if the bass was stripped, and then I re-read your original post and indeed it was originally Jetglo/BT. My theory is that a previous owner (when it was still JG/BT) sprayed the jack plate in black to complete the stealth look (even Shadows have chrome jack plates...), and then he, or someone else, scraped off the paint, maybe when the bass was stripped to natural.

ilan,

thanks for the info,

so, if someone painted the jack plate, then scraped off the paint, would the ROS indicator come off?

I thought, but never saw up close so I dont know, the ROS was imprinted into the jack plate like the serial number.....

is the ROS just a sticker?

It's not engraved like the serial number. It wears off with normal use, look at 15-20 years old Rics and you'll see what's left of it. So if you rub the plate to remove paint, the RIC-O-SOUND lettering will rub off.

The RIC-O-SOUND lettering is missing on my '75 4001 and I guess it has rubbed off - the bass has heavy wear and tear from previous owners so this seems consistent with this. There are other things on the bass which guarantees that it is genuine though. For instance when I asked about the inscriptions in the main cavity at the rickenbacker.com forum someone who used to work at Rickenbacker confirmed the name of someone in the finishing dept. who had his name written in there, and explained the other inscriptions too.

Like Ilan said - it is paint - looks screened. Mine on my '74 4001 is just about gone. Can't see it when you are playing anyhow....
