Now I hear that David Marks, 'the lost Beach Boy' is on tour with Love and Johnston from friends in the UK. Well, what'doyaknow ? David Marks was very sick with Hepititis last I heard. Maybe 'Moneybags' Mike is doing him a favor by letting Marks on the stage with him and Bruce Johnston...???

I've always believed that Marks and Dennis were a volatile combination and that it was their hell-raising that caused Murry to dump Marks and bring Jardine back. Marks was very young at the time and I'm sure it wasn't hard for Murry to convince Mrs. Marks to reclaim her son.

Dave toured for years with the Marksmen, and was laid up awhile back with hepatitis. I'm not surprised that Love and him got together, but Johnston and Marks had no temporal and probably little musical overlap. He's also appearing with Jardine and Jeff Foskett in a UK tour.

Paul, you really know a whole lot about the BB's - any reccomended reading?

The Stephen Gaines bio is good reading: "Heroes and Villains". It's not whitewashed like most others.

About Dennis: "Dumb Angel". A bit dumbed-down and dryly predictable, but still has its nuggets.

Brian: "The Nearest Faraway Place". VERY interesting to contrast Brian's conveniently-recalled and carefully-sidestepping autobio with the above Gaines book.

There's also one that's like "The Beatles Day by Day", but on the BBs. It's thick, heavy, and packed with details. Written by a Brit, as so many of these properly-done rock books are. Can't recall the title, as it's at home.

After you've read these, you can then dig into as many "official" ands "puff" articles and books as you can find; the BBs were careful about tweaking their press coverage, especially after the whole Dennis/Manson episode.

I used to be a Sonoma County guy most of the time. I hate to brag, but I've seen North of Malibu in 3D. I highly recommend them.

If y'all are bored, tomorrow night at around 8:30 I'm going to sit in with a friend at A'roma Roasters in Santa Rosa for a bit. We'll do some originals and some covers. We put a lot of life in some dittirs that some people left out by the curb years ago. I'll be mostly singing and occasionally playing some 'cousticky geetar.

This is my last gig in Norcal for a while, I think. I'm moving to a place near Seattle soon.

I'll see if I can be there, Sundays are usually pretty much of a drag here anyway ( the Mrs. always finds something, somehow that needs fixing ), But she's away with my youngest daughter who's a student at Cal state Chico this weekend.
I can't wait to hear North of Malibu, my kind of music. Cowabunga dude ! ( OK, just kidding, but I'm sure I'll be stoked ) I stumbled on to their myspace from a friend named 'Unsteady Freddie,' ( yes Paul, I do know that dude from another 60s list, quite a character isn't he? But a good guy through and through promoting surf music ) And I listened to NOM's first cut on their myspace page, and WOW, it's like I'm hearing a Jaguar and twang again for the first time in 40+ years. Max reverb through Dual Showman amps !
It should be beautiful weather tomorrow in SonCo, so I do hope to get out. I'll be the old guy with the graying hair sipping de-caf.
I suspect I'll be coming away bragging after I see my first gig of North Of Malibu. Can't wait.

OK, It's called, simply, "The Beach Boys" by Keith Badman. I got it out and re-read the sections on "Pet Sounds" through "Good Vibrations" and the aborted "Smile" project (re-assembled and re-released three years ago; pick up the vinyl if you really want to hear some amazing sound). Those two years--1966 and 1967--were so filled with...stuff...that it's hard to believe that humans could handle such intensity for two years running. This is a large-format book chock full of tidbits and stuff like Musician's Union session records for the pension fund...you wanna know where Hal Blaine or Carol Kaye lived in '67? It's all here. Records of every tour date, all sorts of inside stuff...it's obvious that Badman listened to lots of master tapes with conversation, outtakes, etc.

Interestingly, Mike is absent in most of the studio photos from this period.

I meant tonight (Saturday.) Ooops. We aren't NOM, but we're pretty good for a couple of singin' acousticky guys. I'll be the taller one with the longer hair and the higher voice, who plays a lot less than the other guy.

I've said it before that North of Malibu is worth the trip from anywhere. We're probably worth the trip from virtually anywhere in Railroad Square.

Gary and I met up in SR yesterday...he turned his lovely 360/12V64 over to me for a slick setup. We spent a pleasant hour before NOM practice talking about the '60s (we both seem to remember, so I guess we weren't there) and things Rickenbacker. It's really terrific to meet other Rickophiles and enjoy discovering how our common interests begin with Ricks and extend out from there...

'Yo, Modrock. You are welcome. Very cool that you and Jingle_Jingle were able to hook up yesterday so he could set up your 360/12V64 (yummy!). My dad grew up in Berkeley and Saratoga and I have a boatload of cousins in The City and Oakland. Four years at U.C. Santa Cruz just about shaped me for life in terms of political consciousness. Consider me a Bay Area boy at heart and in spirit.
