I've got to agree on there not looking like there is any wear on the gears, Ted. I've got the screws holding the big gear really tightened, but the slop is in the key when you change directions. Next time I change strings on this bass I will take apart the good key and really look at how the parts fit and gears mesh, then see how the others compare. Thanks for all the input.

Just a quick update: I bought a '76 4001 JG. It's been around the block a few times but it plays great. It has a Bartolini in the neck position---the original pickup came with it but it is very weak. I'm going to look into getting it re-wound.

Great necks and tone on that era 4001 basses. Check the original neck high gain with an ohmmeter - it should read around 8.35k ohms. If it needs rewinding, I would get the neck rewound to the original 8.35k ohms - Sergio would be your man.
