I've tallyied up what we have so far and it's no suprise that The Beatles lead this listing.
Here's the results so far from what i could figure out. If there are any mistakes or clarifications to be made about a name or group that i have listed please chime in.

Re the question mark on Ringo, I think maybe it comes from RIngo owning Lennon's 1996 now?

Here's a late vote for McCartney. He's why I wanted a Rickenbacker bass.

My 2Cts.: For me it was Pete Agnew from Nazareth, playing a 4001FG CB/FWMOP with 2 slanted J-Bass PUs in neck position (he received from Roger Glover). I never liked Macca's or Chris's sound.

In my early period of bass playing at 17-25 years old, it was Geddy Lee and Chris Squire that influenced me. After a long break at age 40 I started up again and it was Dave Meros of Spock's Beard that caught my attention with that nice crunchy, growly sound that he gets out of a 4001.

OK, Now this is the popularity based mostly on when they came to the attention of the world in the 60s and then beyond....

(for me)

#1 has to be Jim McGuinn, later to be Roger, when he was changing the face of music with The Byrds initial sound. I think Dylan heard them loud and clear and laid down his acoustic (for which he was crucified)
#2 Pete sticking a RIC into a Union Jack covered amp face (The Who) while Keith's drums blew up (and also originally playing "I Can't Explain" on a RIC as a baby-faced compositional virtuoso)
#3 Tom Petty (the album cover and live videos early '90s)
#4 George (Ticket to Ride... we - the actual 15-something garage band - practiced that forever)
#5 The Turtles

I personally remember thinking, circa Shea Stadium or so, John had a cool guitar but until George & Jim McG started playing some stuff that had never beeen heard before, the RIC bug did not bite. My keyboard guy had perfect pitch and could figure out entire songs in a matter of 30 minutes. Once we realized what these guys were doing, everyone had to have a 12-string RIC. Yes, I am old enough to actually remember going to "Hard Day's Night" with my girlfriend when it OPENED and have her sob over Paul, who played a Hofner bass then. I hated him. The rest of the band was OK.

I bought my first Rick, a 4001 in the early '70's cause of Squire, then my second, a 4005 in the early '80's cause it looked Beatle-y.
Anyway, Squire would be the reason I noticed Rickenbackers.

While I agree with the list for those who got the Ric name the most exposure for me it was a little different. My top three.......

Lemmy
Cliff Burton
Joey DeMaio.... a killer player with a cutting tone (heavily modified Ric)

Not necessarily for the list but as a note......the most important "promoter" of the brand to me was Dave Iannicca......a friend and player for Cleveland metal band "Destructor" in the mid-'80's. A fantastic player in a great band with excellent tone that took the time to teach me some chops and let me play his Burgundy 4001. He certainly didn't have the huge impact on Ric sales as most list holders (I'd say all but there's Ringo and Eric Behring on the list but he may have inspired a few locals aside from myself.
