YES! I FOUND THAT FREDDIE KING SONG WITH THE TONE I LOVE!

Post by tennis_nick »

The song is called "Ain't No Big Deal On You" and I have it on the "Best of the Shelter Years" album.

What a sound! I love it! absolutely the best sound Ever!!!!! It is the smoothest guitar sound I've EVER heard!

If anyone can find it online, it's worth looking into! If anyone knows how I can get that tone, SOCK IT TO ME!

I couldn't find a vid, but I purchased it from iTunes. Very nice tone!

I can approximate with the Dot Studio and the Pearly Gates. The Pearly Gates in the neck s ok, but the bridge one is awful. I am putting in an SD Jazz(heard great things, even better than a 59 to some) and a P90 tomorrow, to see what happens. I am guessing the P90 may not stay.....Prolly end up with a JB.

PS- they are not real Pearly Gates, they are GFS Fat PAF and they sound quite similar.

My old jazz guitar instructor said he hated the jazz in the bridge. he said it was too soft. didn't offer the bite and attack he wanted...

When a JAzz guy says a pickup is too smooth... well... you get the idea!

Yeah, the SD jazz is going in the neck, where smooth belongs. The GFS Fat PAF PG clones were an inexpensive experiment. Heck they were less than 30 bucks a piece!

Oh! you want it in the neck! yeah, I've got one in the neck of my SG, I love the near piano like clear defined tone you can get. roll the tone back and you're good to go on pretty much anything else!

Old thread but it seems to me he used a Les Paul Gold Top with P-90's more than anything else, usually though a Super Reverb. 8)

That was mostly an early studio thing. He became synonymous with the semihollow gibsons soon enough in his career

Nick you are right. You post jogged my memory. Gibson 345!!!
For what it's worth,I have owned both and would grab the LP first.
As said many times before, a lot of it is in the hands of the player.
