Dr and Robert: Is this the Rickenbacker bass of which you speak?

While I may have the wrong bass in mind, wouldn't a Tuxedo such as the 4003 model have a white lacquered fingerboard, black hardware, black pickguard and truss rod cover, 9 black micro dot inlays and a white finished unbound body?

Terry: I will have to get out my micrometer and check but I do believe that the size of the dots may be discernable by eye.

The black 4001 with the gold pickguards was one I traded to Chris back in early '92. It was originally an early V63 bass I got for a project
to restore. I custom made the gold pickguard and had it refinished in black. The original body halves had been, um, Modified and carved up really badly. So I cut them off the neck section
and made new body halves based on tracings taken from a friends early 70s 4001.In exchange for this bass, I got the mapleglo V63 Chris had in the Byrds boxed set pics, and that was used in the Roy Orbison Tribute concert.I no longer have it, as I traded it for a different V63 I liked a lot better. The "Tuxedo" bass that is mentioned here is simply a White 4001[or 4003?] with black binding and black pickguard and nameplate. Chris told me it was borrowed to use with the monkey suits the Byrds wore atthe induction ceremony.

Dr: Very nice work on the black 4001.
