I use PayPal both as a seller and a buyer. It's easy and fast, and I personally love it. But to require it is just greed on ebays part. They want to take a cut on both ends. I know a lot of sellers that hate paypal......... I think I hear coders creating a new auction site.

Leave it to corporate America to figure out how to make an extra buck.

If they tried that here in the US, it would be much the same as Microsoft forcing IE on all their customers and what they got sued for. Paypal then becomes a monopoly for ebay. I really wish some other viable payment service would be successful so the competition would force Ebay to lower it's paypal fees to stay competive. On big ticket items, paypal takes WAY too much.

I tried listing a bogus item and this is what I got:

"Because of your limited transaction history on eBay, you must offer PayPal or a merchant credit card as a payment method for this listing. PayPal is the safer, easier way to receive payments on eBay".

I dont usually keep a large sum in my paypal account, because I afraid some idiot will cry fraud, and they'll freeze my account.

As far as large purchases, I prefer to pay with a cashiers check from my credit union.

Or does this just mean that I have to "OFFER" Paypal??

Here in the UK Paypal notify Inland Revenue when your sales hit £5,000.

Scott - Good job! All of you knew ebay was up to something when they purchased paypal. I can see this as a tool to report to the IRS in the near future (hopefully not!) without your knowledge, then comes tax from all internet sales :x

I got the same notice, Scott. I just went thru 'fake' motions of a listing and was informed of the same message.

I don't use Paypal, since I had an unfortunate experience with them more than two years ago. I guess my eBay days are numbered.

Something else which caught my eye, and may have been in the eBay rules for some time, but I hadn't seen it before. It stated for sellers, there is a 21day grace period before the auction amount is deposited in your account, due to the possiblity of any disputes. The only way the money would be released earlier is if the buyer gives you positive feedback before the 21 days expires. Is this new, or is it something I've missed because I don't use Paypal?

I hope they give you 21% interest when they hold YOUR money. Sell eBay stock NOW!!!!!!!!
If they keep this up they won't be around for long.

There IS an alternative Internet Money/Bank. It's called Revolution Money exchange. https://www.revolutionmoneyexchange.com/
They actually give you money to join and more $$ if you get your friends to join. (Same as Paypal did way back when.) If anybody wants to join this and make me $5 PM me with your email address and I'll send you an invite. This company was founded in part by Steve Case formally of AOL. I've signed up with them, but so far have done little with them. Paypal has the infrastructure and right now it's VERY easy to use. We'll see if RME can make a dent in Paypal.

They have never held my money and I have been using Paypal since '99. I immediately move my sales money to the bank, and wait the three days before I ship. There has never been an issue.

I do the exact same thing Charly. But I have heard horror stories.....Call me paranoid, but I'm as careful as I can possibly be.

I just received three payments last night and moved the money this morning to my bank. But if they start holding it 21 days then I won't ship for 21 days.

Your money isn't neccessarily safe even when it has been transfered to your bank account. I had a major issue a few years ago when Paypal removed funds from my bank account without my knowledge or permission and placed them back into my Paypal account and then froze my Paypal account for 180 days.

Read the small print when they ask you to validate your bank account (by sending you the two small cash payments). You are giving them open access to deposit or remove funds in/out of your validated bank account as they see fit!

I cancelled the 'validation/ permission to debit' agreement and Paypal immediately set up a new one. My bank manager said that Paypal use a 'back up' software to automatically 'repair broken debit links'. He told me that I had to write to the bank specifically denying Paypal access to my account.

Sounds to me like they're pushing the envelope as far as they can, and I'll bet they're waiting for lawsuits to be filed.

They will do it as long as they can get away with it, or until some laws are established to keep things reasonable and customary.

Like any other bank or credit card company, Paypal/Ebay is not very consumer friendly IMO.
