Should I buy? Vox AC30CC2

This guy's in my neck of the woods, and I've always wanted an AC30. I've heard all the CC series horror stories, and I know it doesn't have the blues in it, but I can't help but want it. Would you pay $700 for this?

I've got the same one Wes - a tube change and it's been great. I'd go for it.

I've heard all the horror stories too, but I can't substantiate them. I bought an AC30CC2X off the 'bay about 18 months ago, and the only problem I had was with a bad guitar cable  .

Not just my opinion--Johneek has played my amp--John, chime in dude!.

These are great amps.

The AC30 CC2 is a great amp. I own one and it sounds just as good as my vintage HW AC30. The only problem was the preamp tubes. They were really noisy. Once I replaced them the amp worked great. The only other issue you might have is a too short length of speaker wire for comfort when sliding the chassis out to change the tubes. The speakers are "hard wired" on the CC2s. This can be modded with ease however, either by having removeable female connectors on the end where the speaker wires attach to the speaker, like so (this is the North Coast Music fix):

Or you could have a guitar tech wire in a speaker jack to the underside of the chassis and attach a 1/4 jack end on the speaker wires and plug it in that way.

For $700, I'd definitely buy the amp, you can buy a pair of alnico 12s and still be ahead of the game $-wise, whether they're the Celestion Alnicos, Weber Blue Pups, or Eminence Red Fangs.

So I bought the amp. It's in great condish, and sounds good to boot. The only thing is that the grille cloth is loose and it was gonna drive me nuts, so I'm taking the whole thing apart right now to get that fixed. Kind of a pain.

I've heard of loose fret cloth being tightened by lightly spraying water (from a pump bottle) and carefully drying it with a blow dryer.

It was pretty darn loose. It had the grille cloth replaced once under warranty and apparently the guy who did it did a pretty weak job. I took it to an upholsterer earlier and now it's all good. I'm reassembling the amp now.

I've been playing with it a lot today and it sounds great. Even without the blues in it, it still rips.

My favorite amp without question. Last time I was with Bill, he couldn't get me to play anything else. Congrats on the amp....great choice.

I bought one off craigslist for $700 also, about 2 months ago. Great amp. Although it has developed a noticeable hum. Time for new tubes.

The hum is most likely due to bad filter caps, not the tubes.
