So I am back...

Post by GrEgOrY »

I joined the forum like 6 years ago when I got my first ric, it was a late 60's early 70's 4001 and a carcass. I joined to get help, I got more than that as Sergio sent me a pickup...out of the blue. I could not remember my user name or anything for that matter. I just got a new project, at beat up 77 4001, that I won't feel guilty taking out on the road. The electronics are a mess, but at least the bridge pickup works. It have a varitone selector on it...So, I get to mess with it all day tomorrow.
So, to introduce myself...I am greg, I play guitar and bass, but "professionally" I play Bass. I quit playing bass for several years, then Joined a Goth Death rock band called SECOND SKIN. Played Bass for them for 2 years, and then rejoined my old band AUDRA. So, for the past couple years I've been playing more bass, and the 77 ric came my way. I went to the roberto-venn school of luthiery in phx and built 2 ric-alikes, and an acoustic. I do love rickenbackers, but feel ashamed that I don't know much about them, and probably won't post like some of you hardcore ric-aholics. I am 39 and am also relearning how to skateboard! I spend alot of time on the OLD MAN ARMY skateboarding website..30 or deader. I work for UNO guitars, who is the USA contact for guitar parts from SUNG-IL in Korea, as well as TESLA guitar pickups, and of course UNO guitars. I have the most respect for Rickenbacker for not making a cheapie line called rickensquire. So there I am, kinda.
I'll try to get better pictures, as some of your pictures are amazing.

Welcome Greg!

Cool late 60's/Early 70's Rick. I'd like to see more photos.

RIC is VERY protective of their trademarks. That's why you see a million Les Paul and Strat knock-offs and hardly any Rick knock offs. Certain shapes (Body shapes, TRC, tail piece, slash hole, etc.) are trademarked RIC property. In order to maintain their trademarks, their legal team has to put an end to the sale of any RIC knock-off they see. The protection of their intellectual property is very costly for RIC and a never-ending headache I'm sure.

Any who...as much as your Rick-like guitars are well intentioned tributes to a guitar manufacturer that you love, this website is dedicated to genuine Rickenbacker instruments and is read by RIC employees and its owner(s). Your Rick tribute instruments will probably generate some controversy here.

It looks to me like your instruments are well done treasures for you and a great way for you to practice your craft. But I'm just sayin'...a lot of people on this forum don't see it that way. I've been here for a few years and I've seen other members get in heated discussions over similar tribute guitars...so be prepared for this possibility if you're going to post photos of and discuss your tribute guitars.

Hopefully I'm not coming across as a jerk!

Jeff, you said that well in my opinion.

Greg, welcome back!. Now I hope my welcome back does not get spoiled by my telling you that this is not the best place to be showing pics of your Rick copies. Many of us do not appreciate Rick copies (myself included). They look like you made them very well, but they are infringements of RIC trademarks. Like Jeff said, RIC employees and CEO also read this forum.

We'd love to discuss and see more pics of your real Rick.
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS! :-)

Thanks gents, I am not worried about any copywrite infingements, as these are one offs, folk art? and will never be available for sale...ever. In the meantime, I have noticed that as much as everybody hates the rickenfackers, you spend alot of time talking about them, thus...have a go. I am just getting the 77 together, gots to make a nut today, and once it's up and running, I'll add some pics of it, then some better pics of my other one. The two I made, I made them for myself as an excercise, as a requirement...I was at school, and everybody was making telecasters and such. I don't build guitars now, as I just have a gtr parts desk job.The one is a 6 string bass, something I have never tried to play before, but fun. I hope nobody becomes upset at these guitars. :|
I do need a saddle piece for the 77, and need Sergios mailing address...I owe him a dead pickup.
it is what it is.

I kinda like you're tributes. And seeing how he's never gonna sell them, or even pass it off as a real Rickenbacker I have no problem at all with them. I think they're cool.

Welcome back!

The six string bass is a good idea. Is it tuned EADGBE or BEADGC?
It looks kind of narrow, so it would suit the guitar tuning better perhaps, and If Ric won't build one....
(apart from the elusive 4005/6)
