Need Answers on John Lennon!

Post by Desperate »

We are two students in a class called Dangerous Offenders presenting on John Lennon and the events that led up to his murder. We are looking for your personal thoughts on a few questions of our own to present to our class. This could be done anonymously if you wish.
Please help us to make the best of our learning experience.
Thank You :D

1. What were your first thoughts when you heard of John Lennon being murdered?

2. What type of threat did Lennon present to Mark Chapman?

3. Lennon, as the celebrity he was, do you believe he put himself at risk to be harmed?

4. Is there a cost to be paid for being successful or a celebrity?

5. Could Lennon be compared to Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King?

Please do not feel that you have to place an input in all questions presented. Any contribution would be much appreciated.

I'll answer ya right here.

1. What were your first thoughts when you heard of John Lennon being murdered?
He was dead before I was born, so I can't say.

2. What type of threat did Lennon present to Mark Chapman?
None at all.

3. Lennon, as the celebrity he was, do you believe he put himself at risk to be harmed?
Yes.

4. Is there a cost to be paid for being successful or a celebrity?
Oh yeah.

5. Could Lennon be compared to Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King?
Not at all. I believe all that peace stuff he did was to keep Yoko quiet.

1. What were your first thoughts when you heard of John Lennon being murdered?

Speaking from a British perspective – Americans and guns – almost bound to happen

2. What type of threat did Lennon present to Mark Chapman?

Too opinionated by half – humility was never John Lennon’s strongest suite.

3. Lennon, as the celebrity he was, do you believe he put himself at risk to be harmed?

Substitute celebrity for Icarus and one is bound to be harmed if one risks flying too close to the sun.

4. Is there a cost to be paid for being successful or a celebrity?

Yes, it’s called privacy. People think they know you but you don’t know them therefore, human nature dictates that they will either love, hate or be indifferent towards you and there is nothing one can do about it – except move to an ivory tower.

5. Could Lennon be compared to Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King?

No – I feel that he lacked the necessary physical and mental courage. Witness his reactions when seemingly backed into a corner over the likes of the Pete Best situation, the Beatles are more famous than Jesus backlash and the perceived deportation threat from the USA.

Since people are choosing to post here, this is what I had to say.

I hope this is helpful.

1. What were your first thoughts when you heard of John Lennon being murdered?

Who would do such a thing? He had to be a madman.

2. What type of threat did Lennon present to Mark Chapman?

None!

3. Lennon, as the celebrity he was, do you believe he put himself at risk to be harmed?

Celebrities are always at risk of deranged fans doing something stupid, and while living in Manhattan, John did not take too many precautions with respect to his own safety.

4. Is there a cost to be paid for being successful or a celebrity?

Yes. Lack of freedom to do what normal people can do without making splash in the news headlines.

5. Could Lennon be compared to Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King?

Definitely not. The three you mention galvanized their nation or their followers in the case of MLK. John was a musician, singer and songwriter who campaigned for peace. There's a huge difference.

1. What were your first thoughts when you heard of John Lennon being murdered?
What is this, some sort of sick joke? We already went through this with the whole Paul-is-dead thing.
2. What type of threat did Lennon present to Mark Chapman?
None. Chapman was clearly deranged.
3. Lennon, as the celebrity he was, do you believe he put himself at risk to be harmed?
I suppose that when your face is so well known, almost anybody would recognize you everywhere you go, there would be some risk.
4. Is there a cost to be paid for being successful or a celebrity?
Apparently so. It's called privacy. You can't do anything stupid (like getting fallin' down, commode huggin' drunk) without making the front page of the newspaper. You'd better not say anything stupid about anything or anyone. I should imagine it's like walking on eggs.
5. Could Lennon be compared to Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King?
No. John Lennon was a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and a musician who used his celebrity and artistic abilities to speak out for peace and justice. The others were political leaders who inspired whole peoples to act on their own behalf for freedom and justice.

Here are some loose, early AM thoughts....
1. What were your first thoughts when you heard of John Lennon being murdered?
I was, at the time, not really into music as much as I had been growing up in the '60s, and nowhere near as much as now--it was a long period where I didn't do much more than listen to radio. I heard the news as I was getting ready for bed, and it was an immediate sense of personal loss, which surprised me as I hadn't thought of the Beatles or John Lennon all that much for 3 or 4 years. I recall a sense of sad nostalgia, regret that I had missed out on the last years of his life and art. In short, I think it struck me as a mixture of sadness and surprise that it affected me as much as it did.
2. What type of threat did Lennon present to Mark Chapman?
Well, from a John Lennon or fan's perspective, I'd say absolutely none. I don't know what was at work (or not at work) in Chapman's mind.
3. Lennon, as the celebrity he was, do you believe he put himself at risk to be harmed?
I don't think so...NYC is a city full of artists of various fame and repute. He'd been such a fixture there, I doubt he felt he was that much at risk, except for the hounding of the gov't.
4. Is there a cost to be paid for being successful or a celebrity?
I think obviously, yeah. Reading about their Beatlemania days, their lives were not their own to be sure, and it's reasonable to assume had JL become a nightclub performer with a "day" job it's unlikely that he would have been singled out by a deranged, obsessed individual, though I'm sure there are instances where this has perhaps occurred as well. I think to put it in the context of the times, from roughly the mid-'60s through the late '70s/early '80s, there were quite a few outspoken celebrities who drew negative attention for political positions, individual acts, etc., and yet none of them were murdered. John Lennon's murder, to me, was particularly tragic in that he really didn't represent a threat to anyone, if he ever really had. The act seemed to me to be aimed at destroying something of beauty, as opposed to an act of opposing views, etc..
5. Could Lennon be compared to Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King?
Well, the wording in the question seems to pre-suppose the answer, but I'd disagree there's a legitimate comparison, or at least a strong comparison. The three individuals you offer as examples are known to us for their life-long opposition to oppression and social injustices--in other words, we know of them because of their struggles and sacrifice. John Lennon on the other hand was an artist we first met through his art, who then decided to use that fame and station in life we accorded him to try to generate social changes and awareness. Though their impacts and efforts eventually reached global proportions, the immediate efforts of the first three were substantially aimed at challenges in their immediate existence--Mandela and Apartheid, Gandhi at Colonial rule, and MLK at civil rights. Lennon's efforts, for the most part, seemed more global and less well-defined in nature (though he and Yoko did try and influence some specific causes).

Hope this is helpful to your project, just one man's opinion of course.

Cheers, Bill

1. What were your first thoughts when you heard of John Lennon being murdered?
I was 10. I remember hearing about it and thinking "glad it wasn't one of the Stones. When's the next KISS album coming out?"

2. What type of threat did Lennon present to Mark Chapman?
likely none

3. Lennon, as the celebrity he was, do you believe he put himself at risk to be harmed?
we all do every minute of every day.

4. Is there a cost to be paid for being successful or a celebrity?
$1.50

5. Could Lennon be compared to Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King?
you can try to make such a comparison, but i think it would be fruitless.

I was devistated. I had been making Lennon only Beatle tapes at that time. It was unfathomable that anyone would want to kill him, of all people. He was a Beatle! He had brought so much joy to so many!

2. What type of threat did Lennon present to Mark Chapman?

Chapman obsessed with the idea of Lennon being a phoney.

3. Lennon, as the celebrity he was, do you believe he put himself at risk to be harmed?

Lennon's murder got celebrities more aware of their personal security. IIRC, Chapman had a few people on his hit list, including Johnny Carson. Lennon and Yoko freely and openly walked the streets of NY, putting themselves at risk before that was a major concern.

4. Is there a cost to be paid for being successful or a celebrity?

Obviously. Even before Lennon's murder, there were many books on the Beatles. Fans knew their families, their childhood experiences and more. Look at the celebs of today, chased by paprazzi, photographed drunk in cars, etc. I'm sure they knew there'd be a trade off, but it must be at a degree they couldn't have imagined.

5. Could Lennon be compared to Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King?

I feel his peace thing was just a gimmick to put Yoko and he in the public eye ( I mean, come on, every one under 30 was into the peace movement by the time they annointed themselves leaders of it! Not that they didn't truly believe, however), and in part a pre-emptive move, being he (none of them, for that matter) had an idea if he'd have a successful career post - Beatles.

Please do not feel that you have to place an input in all questions presented. Any contribution would be much appreciated.

1. What were your first thoughts when you heard of John Lennon being murdered?
When he was murdered, i was about two years old. When i've heard about it, i was like eight or something, and i thought, "that's too sad, he was a cutie".
2. What type of threat did Lennon present to Mark Chapman?
Whatever was in Chapman's head. That was something in his brain, i guess. I couldn't say.
3. Lennon, as the celebrity he was, do you believe he put himself at risk to be harmed?
Well, to some extent, yes. When you're in public, and known by many, there'll always be somebody who wouldn't like you. And the more people know about you, the more people may take a dislike in you.
4. Is there a cost to be paid for being successful or a celebrity?
Indeed. You cannot be yourself anymore. You should fit in with the expectations of the general public. And the public always knows better as to whoyouareness and whatyoushoulddoness. Moreover, a celebrity "reputation" is easy to be harmed or destroyed and hard — if not impossible — to be re-established.
5. Could Lennon be compared to Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King?
No, no way. He's a musician/showman in the first place, and for me, the rest doesn't really matter.
Nothing will get you dead quicker than being deadly serious about yourself.

1. What were your first thoughts when you heard of John Lennon being murdered?
Very angry that the world had been robbed of a gifted artist, a family had lost a husband and father coming up to Christmas. Any hope of Beatle reunification had now gone forever.
2. What type of threat did Lennon present to Mark Chapman?
None at all
3. Lennon, as the celebrity he was, do you believe he put himself at risk to be harmed?
I guess so, fame and continuing success do not come by keeping a low profile.
4. Is there a cost to be paid for being successful or a celebrity?
Yes, but I suppose you dont see the bigger picture until you are there
5. Could Lennon be compared to Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King?
No.

Do I think Chapman should ever be paroled?
No

2. What type of threat did Lennon present to Mark Chapman?

As far as this question, it's a matter of perspective. From what I have gathered, Chapman was fairly deranged. A Bad childhood can mess you up long after you're grown up. I don't think it was a Man vs. Man conflict in itself. it was more of a man vs. self type of conflict. I think there was something inside of Chapman that he either never came to terms with, or never understood, and that internal conflict was personified in Lennon for whatever reason. Probably the same way the White Album was so revered by Chuck Manson as a means for murder. Personification to justify a means. At that point, it became nothing more than getting rid of the problem, which, to Chapman, was personified by Lennon. However, you can't say that Lennon presented a threat to Chapman. After all, a sucker punch cannot be considered a fight.

Don't let that paragraph make you think I feel for Chapman. He had problems yes. He could've seeked help but instead he did something unthinkable. That's all I have to say about that.
