Shipping horror

Post by wittyair »

Just received a guitar that I bought off ebay. UPS shows up to the door carrying a guitar case....no box, no nothing,
just the guitar case in all it's unadulteraded glory. I took the case in horror fully expecting to find at the very least a severely dinged up guitar. Miraculously, it was unharmed and in great shape. Definitely dodged the bullet on this one.

I just received a RIC 600 series case, delivered by UPS, that was damaged and it was in a box. Go figure.

IMO there is very little accountability on the part of shipping companies now. They just make you jump through so many hoops and hope that you'll get tired of it.

Have you contacted the seller to find out about why it wasn't boxed?

I remember when my 660/12 arrived from a California Guitar Center, the box was completely damaged, but luckily, the case was unharmed and the guitar was fine.

Same thing happened to me once, Craig! The guitar case arrived, sans box, with the shipping label stuck right on the case! I chalked it up to ignorance on the seller's part. The (acoustic!) guitar was none worse for wear.

Bought my first Ric in 06, a 660/12TPFG off eBay; shipped from Pennsylvania and I live in SoCal. He shipped UPS. It arrived, I signed for it and the guy left. Then I noticed a kick-hole in the box. I flagged the guy down and asked him to note that the box had a hole in it. He wouldn't, saying that UPS will blame the shipper anyway. When I told him that it was packaged by and shipped from a UPS Store, he said (I'm paraphrasing) "I've worked for UPS for ten years, they never pay on this kind of stuff. If it's from a UPS Store, my advice is to take pictures while you open it and maybe you'll have some leverage. Good luck."

There was no damage, but now I insist everything comes FedEx. I've had no problems with attitude or damage since the switch.

Check the RIC forum for lots of stories about shippers. I seem to remember reading that RIC won't use UPS anymore, but don't quote me on that.

I also only use FedEx . UPS charges for and performs the worst packing I have ever seen . I came home and found a box on my portch containing a brand new 660/12 from Music123 . Lucky nobody walked by and picked it up while I was gone !
It's too early in the morning to talk about our relationship !

I bought a Danelectro U2 once on Ebay. When it arrived, I was horrified to see that the seller had simply shipped it in it's gig bag and NO BOX! The bag was stuffed with newspapers. Fortunately, there was no damage.

My 660 was shipped from NY to Israel with Fedex, not only the case was in perfect shape when I opened the box - but the box itself... the thing traveled from NY to Israel (not going the shortest route of course...)
So long and thanks for all the fish!

IMHO there are plenty of shipper horror stories about everyone.

I've been using UPS for five years and have never had a problem.
In fact, I've told the story before on how one driver helped me track down a package on another truck.

The only two problems I've ever had have been with FedEx. So go figure. It's not an all or nothing thing here.

No damages, but twice, when the paperwork requested my signature for delivery, UPS just left the guitar on my porch, broad daylight. I get home at night.

I ALWAYS had a problem with UPS, whether internaional or in the states, it is consistently awful. My list is too long to get started.

You have your best shot with the Post Office or FedEx.
