Lindy Fralin sure is a busy guy...
Remember that last bass that was on the 'bay with "pickups rewound by Lindy Fralin"? Here's ANOTHER one. Why would that need to be done on a bass?

"They make great f***'n basses". - Lemmy, NAMM 2009
Well, I had a gibson eb pup rewound by Fralin a couple of years ago....It had just died...there was 0 output and the wiring was totally intact....I had noticed that over the previous years it had been getting weaker and weaker...I guess sometimes a pup can just quit functioning...some people get their pups rewound just to get a different sound. At any rate, the rewound humbucker sounded huge and better than I ever remember it sounding...Fralin does do excellent work, but, so does our own esteemed Sergio!
Hey, Paul, thanks, but there is really no need. I'm still confident I'll find 44 wire locally sooner or later.
As for the 1977 at issue, I don't think that pickguard is original to it.
And as for rewinding the pickups on a bass, well, more often than not this results in a definite improvement, as David points out.

A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.
Paul, yes, I use a pick on the 8 stringer aka The Juggernaut....I actually had a new nut cut for it in the traditional 8 string setup as in the 4008 mentioned here...but then I changed back to the original...with this (unstandard) setup you can use it almost as a 4 string by just plucking down on the strings and switch to the 8 string sound with a little more attack or by using an upstroke!! Truthfully though, I really don't use it too often...but it's a nice piece to have when the wild dog bites me!!
Sergio,as usual, you're right! That guard shouldn't be that wide at the neck pup and I've never seen one with a curve on the top side like that....I'll be going by akc electronic supplies on mon. anyway so I'll drop in and see if they have your wire...I'm sure they will....I still have to send you a question about my 4005 toaster...just been busy lately and i'll try to do the drawing, scan it and get it off to you before the weekend is up. dm
