Bob, I think you are right, the basses that Rickenbacker is making now are the best they've ever been... Part of me hates making a statement like that, because you all know I love the old ones, but I think its true! The v63s I have, while not dead letter perfect reproductions like the C series, are incredibly versatile instruments, with really nice pickups that give wonderful tonal variations. And the new Cheyennes are even quieter and more broad ranging than the v63s. Gawd, I think I just sold myself on a new 4004!!!!

The active Fenders cured me of wanting an active bass, I don't want any transisters in my chain, if they can figure out how to get a tube into a bass I'll try it. When I play an old Ric I love it, then play a new one, big improvment, I play an old Fender, love it, play a new one and think, Jeez what happened to these things?
A couple of years ago I almost bought a Sunburst 65 P bass for $2500.00 at a guitar show, told the guy I wanted to think about it, went home and called him that night to buy it, and he said it sold 15 minutes after you left. I would pay that much for an old Fender rather than buy a new one. the difference is like night and day. With Rics nowadays you get a better product than even the old ones, they definitely have their charm and I love them but for everyday playing, give me a 90's 4003. (although I got my 78 4001 sounding great out here for what I want and need, the big boom) that is why I say if you really get to know them and tweak these things you can pretty much get them to sound like you want them to sound, and I have all the original parts on mine too.

I'd suggest anyone try any bass you want to possibly own.

With all due respect to this forum, Rickenbackers can't do everything. Other companies make fine basses. Outside of collecting, I can't see the point of owning 5 Ric basses (or Fender, or ....).

Correction from my earlier post: my brother's p-bass is not a "Deluxe" but an "Elite" precision bass from the early '80's. Very nice instrument (almost as nice as my new Ric ;-)

I agree w/ Bobampeg...I own 2 all original old Sunburst P basses...a 63,and a 65...Two of the finest basses I've ever owned...I love em' ... Imho, their newer stuff just doesn't measure up anymore...they've gone so far into bastardizing their instruments,(ie. the Hoppus and Mike Dirnt basses, just to name a couple),it seems as though they've lost focus at some point over the years on what really matters....However,since acquiring my first Ric,(4001 V63),I'm floored at the quality, sound, feel, looks, and overall build of these instruments...I too,am now looking forward to my next one...I'm thinking a BB 4003...is in the works shortly....

Jeff actually came over to my desk (we work together) and told me how proud he was that he managed to insert Ricks in the hands of Beavis and Butthead, and that it was the best work he did all day. So...take that for what you will! Image I thought it was quite hilarious myself!
