Sonny Boy - the story of self rising white corn meal

Post by charlyg »

Ok, let's see if I can tell this story..................

I was perusing ebay the other day and ended up looking at an auction for a Sonny Boy Corn Meal bag, unused.

It is from Helena Arkansas, and looks very cool.

Now, as most blues folks know, there were two Sonny Boy Williamsons. Both played harmonica, but one (John Lee Williamson), was a recording star in Chicago and well known throughout the country.

In the early forties, there was a radio show from Helena called the King Biscuit Hour, and it was sponsored by the local flour company. He decided to market Aleck "Rice" Miller as Sonny Boy Williamson, since both played harmonica on the radio show, and then decided to put his picture on the corn meal and call it Sonny Boy Cornmeal. As the story goes, the original Sonny Boy didn't mind someone masquerading as him, as he rarely left Chicago, and Sonny Boy II was in the south, and Miller never recorded while Sonny Boy was alive. He was murdered in Chicago, in 1948 I believe.

If you want to delve further, just Google King Biscuit or Sonny Boy Williamson. In fact, if you find some neat ones, just link 'em! Great stories, some sad. One was a story from Robbie Robertson. He went to see Sonny Boy one night and noticed he kept spitting into a spittoon. Robbie went up after the show, and saw that it was blood. I have gathered he was quite a drinker, to the point it really affected his health.

I intend on getting a swatch of burlap or somesuch and framing it. It may not be worth a whole lot, but it is very unique!
