Explain this one to me please?

Post by squirebass »

I didn't know that lefty's were going for this much! I'm lefthanded but I play right handed becuase when I took up the bass, I wanted to be able to compare lots of basses with each other. Now seeing this price, I'm very glad I did:

Righty headstock, upside-down inlays, I wonder why they bothered with the nameplate.

Looks like some "flash glare" causing that FG look on the headstock.

As for the "mounting plate", it actually looks more like some kind of thin metallic flaps installed within the pickup mounting ring to keep the interior of the pickup cavity (including the mounting plate) from showing.

It's a "modesty mod", if you will.Image

The seller says the last lefty Rick 4001 sold for $2695 on Ebay, I don't remember anything like that!?! And there is a Mapleglo lefty out there now, that is cooler IMHO, and going for about half what they want for that one....

lefty rics always sell for less than righty models ... $2695???? ... if that is true then my 1968 4001 is worth $10,000 ...

The one he refers to is the 1971 4001LH in Mapleglo that Scott Jennings won off of ebay, and it did go for $2695....find another one. Image

Yes, he was referring to the bass I bought. I am guessing the bass was started earlier than 1971, thus my rather high final bid. I'll know when it arrives on Wednesday. My high bid was $2,650, plus $35 shipping.

I contacted this person and explained the facts of life regarding Rickenbacker eras and values. We'll see what difference it makes.

Lefty instruments DO NOT sell for less than right handed ones. If you know of somewhere that this is true please let me know directly, as I will be there in a heartbeat.

Scott, I think the one you got is quite a bit nicer than what is being offered by this guy, at least I hope so... And I thought that Lefties usually went for a little bit MORE than a right-handed instrument of equal value, but not double!
I'd like to see pics of your bass, when you get it.

I agree with Jeff; I bought a 330 JG LH for my grand-niece last year for about the same price of a comparable right-hander.

The guy selling the bass in question made sure to point out to me that he has been a Rickenbacker dealer since the 1960's and knew what he had. I explained that his instrument is from the era when they DID make lefties on a regular basis, and that $800 would be a more appropriate top dollar figure. Using the one I bought as a reference point is completely misleading. I know of less than a dozen lefty 4001s with full inlay and checkered binding. I can't say the same for late 1970's models.

Good luck to him I guess.
