Here's one for Steve Howe fans. Some nice country pickin' in one section.

John, that version of America is on the Keys to Ascension DVD. They performed it live on the Open Your Eyes tour that followed. It's the only time I've ever seen them perform it in concert. Howe's playing is amazing on that track.

Steve used his Hayman 2020 and not the 175 for the studio version. But the video is great - anytime the ES-175 and 4001S are out at the same time, I know I won't be disappointed!

Tony, that clip was cool! How about that Dylan cover? What was that about? Probably Steve's idea. I'm not a big Dylan fan, so I passed on Steve's Portraits of Bob Dylan when it was released. Big mistake! I heard it last year and really liked it, especially some of the guest vocalists, including Jon, Max Bacon (GTR), Annie Haslam and Phoebe Snow.

I wonder if YES could be complelled to releasing that GFTO session footage in it's entirety on DVD. There is a lot of great behind the scenes stuff that a lot of us find interesting.

These rehearsal videos are priceless. I like hearing the early versions of songs and see where the finished version evolved from. Was that Patrick and Rick together there at the end of Jim's linked video?!

I remember when the lost Lennon tapes were being aired back in the 80's. One night they played about nine versions of "Strawberry Fields Forever". No version sounded the same and none of them sounded much like the final track.

I wonder how much outtake material is lying around in record company vaults and when they will realize that it has some commercial value. I don't care for gossip type shows like "Behind the music" where they seem to focus on messed up celebrity's lives falling apart. I couldn't care less about who screwed whom or how much drugs and alcohol they consumed. But the musical end, the creative stuff about how the music got inspired and the stories about the recording sessions always fascinates me... perhaps that is why I became a sound engineer in the first place.

When Chris Squire released his FOOW DVD with the narration track, I thought it was genius! I'd buy more of those types of things if artists would release them. Maybe the market can't really sustain such a niche, but it would be cool. Image "Close to the edge" or "Who's Next" with full band narration about the tracks, how they were conceived and what it took to get the final versions on tape. I don't mean eq settings... I write a lot of music myself, as do many of us and I know that there is a lot of history behind some songs. For instance, Jon Anderson once said that "Long Distance Runaround" was inspired by the Kent State shootings. Chris said that his bass line in "Heart of the Sunrise" was a train coming into the city. Steve Howe stated that when composing one of his solo pieces that he "imagined a sleepy clown wandering aimlessly about the countryside"... Stuff like that. Give us more!

For the sake of expediency (gotta hit the sack), I'll just say I agree wholeheartedly with Jim's post (although I would like to know all the minutia regarding EQ settings and the like 8) ). Is it VH-1 Classic or something similar that goes into the studio with famous muti tracks and has various people involved comment on how things went down at the time of recording? I distinctly remember seeing something like that for Fleetwood Mac's Rumors album - they'd mute everything and pull up the fader on a particular guitar track out of many for example. I'd *love* to see something like that for Close To The Edge, although truthfully they could do a couple hours on Yes and I'd still want more.

One thing I'd often thought back to - remember a few (or many) years ago the fellas made mention that someone had discovered a treasure trove of either live audio or video (can't recall which it was - maybe both) in some old road cases? IIRC, it was either White or Howe that were talking about possibly doing something with this stuff. Wonder what came of that?

Chris, I saw Wakeman live on his 1996 solo tour. He mentioned that, when moving, he discovered a box that had all of the CTTE outtake reels. PLEASE, Release, release them!!!

That clip of "To be over" was nice, because the audio is so bad on the original QPR bootleg. This guy had a better version from another concert that he smoothly dubbed in. Nice job!

Thanks for the link Tom! Simply awesome as I've always loved that song. Relayer, another underrated Yes album. My son and I used to drive around in the car on trips or errands and listen to a live tape of Gates of Delirium together. He was 13 or so.

Is it just me being dyslexic or something, or is Chris' ability to play a bass part like that and sing beautiful harmonies a rare talent?

Jim, +1 on your post also.

So far in all the years I've hacked, there is only one song I can play and sing at the same time - When I'm 64. Don't know why, but I can. All the other times I play and forget to sing, or sing and forget to play.

My wife has a DVD of Sting (something about a concert in Tuscany) and I watched it with her when she first got it, and he was talking to the guy that was playing bass for this outdoor concert, trying to show him the timing of the part to the singing, and when he tried to sing the part, he fumbled, and said he couldn't sing it without a bass in his hands. I found that one of those lightbulb moments. It is an integrated thought process, not separate items in the brain.

Perfectly said Jim.

Ton, I just LOVE IT when YES does something like TO BE OVER. It gives me goosebumps like "SOON". I know it isn't their most complicated stuff, which I love as well, but it is just such a sweet sound..... :D

I'm PRAYING they do something from Relayer or TFTO during the upcoming tour. I've never seen anything from either album live before.

That was my luck – the first time I saw Yes was the Relayer tour … So I had been listening to Yes Songs and thinking yeah CTTE, Roundabout – all that stuff and they open with Soundchaser….. WOW! Totally blown away. Had never heard it before. I think they had Ritual running that night as well. Really looking forward to seeing them in July in Baltimore MD.

Tony, when I saw Yes do Soon here in the Zoo, Jon was all in white and when they hit the "Soon, oh soon the light" part, a green laser laid a cone of green light all around him - it was spectacular!

I've seen them do The Ritual twice, and all 4 sides of TFTO. I saw the Relayer tour also. I have some really fantastic color slides and b&w pictures - it was back when you could still take a camera in (1976 ish).
