Squeeze

Post by rickenbrother »

I'm not much of a fan of '80's new wave music, though I did like some of the popular songs by the band Squeeze. Squeeze went through several personnel changes. I believe this is bassist John Bentley, who used a Burgundy 4000 and sometimes used a Kramer aluminum neck DMZ 5000.

I think this is Chris Difford with a 325 or 350 in this "Tempted" video:
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS! :-)

Chris Difford is playing in town tomorrow night. Think I'll stop by and check him out. Wish Tillbrook and he were still together, though.

Joey, i've just watched an acoustic set on the tv last night featuring Glenn Tilbrook! He still has that great squeeze feel!
Great band, formerly UK Squeeze with the famous "Cool for cats" hit.
"Tempted" is my favourite of theirs! A classic!

Great group, with catchy tunes and very clever lyrics. Some of the cockney references are probably lost on the overseas contingent, but they were well funny.

Certainly one of the best from the late 70's.

I quite like "Pulling Mussels".

Tempted was actually Paul Carrack (keyboards at the time) on lead vocals, with a line from Tilbrook, and another from Elvis Costello in the 2nd verse! Difford/Tilbrook wrote it though :)

Definitely some decent lyrics from Squeeze!

I'm a big fan of two of their mid-90s albums, _Some Fantastic Place_ and _Ridiculous_... check out the lyrics from "Cold Shoulder", pretty vivid!

I saw then a few weeks back on the Al Murray show. No Jools Holland though.

I have been to 3 Glenn shows in the last couple of years. Two were electric with his band The Fluffers and one was an acoustic one man show. Glenn is one of the finest entertainers I have ever seen. Yes, he has the Squeeze feel with his distinctive voice and he does play a lot of Squeeze songs. He also has a couple of very fine solo albums out (especially "Transatlantic Ping Pong") and many of those songs stand well against the Squeeze catalog. Then, last summer I saw the reformed Squeeze on tour (Glenn, Chris, John Bentley, and two of Glenn's Fluffers). It was FANTASTIC! It was SO great to hear the harmonies of Glenn and Chris back together again. What a great show. If anyone can catch their tour in 2008, please do. It's worth it. These guys still have the feel and the energy and aren't just going through the motions. If you can catch a Glenn show, please do. I have not had the opportunity to catch a Chris show, so can't comment on that. I would have gone to Squeeze again this year but I'm away on vacation that week - ****. Jon
Just make the time to play guitar!

I'm in Glenn's doucmentary, the one covering his acoustic tour. I'm seen playing guitar with Glenn (and a whole gaggle of people watching and singing along) in someone's living room in Atlanta.

Just dumb luck, being in the right place at the right time.

Glenn was really nice, and when I saw him again a year or so later, he remembered me - he even said "Did you get a haircut?"

Joey, I have a hard time classifying Squeeze as a new wave group.
They wrote in the classic pop form and had a lot of souful influence.
Their tunes stand up better than say, Annimotion's, to this day.

Their heyday might have coincided with the new wave movement, but so did the Police and others, whom I can't put in that classification either. IMHO, of course.

They're a longtime fave of mine and I feel they transend the era in which they produced the majority of their popular music.
