What Fender bass do you prefer?
Re: What Fender bass do you prefer?
Very nice. Not you Jeff, I mean the bass.
Sorry I could not resist.

Def a Jazz Bass. I have a white '62 RI with the stacked knobs that is awesome. Great sound and feel on it.
Re: What Fender bass do you prefer?
I love both my P and J basses. Actually, the 74 P has a J p/up layout with DM p/ups and with the maple neck just plain out honks! Fantastic bass sound across the spectrum. I've played it more than anything else since I picked it up 6 months ago. The neck takes a little more getting use to, but that sound...
The 64 Jazz is a different animal and it's sound is it's own too. Slim neck, that works better for me, and so easy to play. I just need in refinned in shell pink...

What Fender do I prefer - any! I have lucked out and never had a bad Fender, though I have been pretty selective.
The current herd:
'71 P Bass with EMGs (Pups switched in '82/3 immediately after purchase). Narrow neck, not quite J-bass narrow, but close. Does a great impression of a Ric 4000 when the treble is boosted to the max;
MIJ '62 RI J-Bass. Plays great, sounds great, cost next to nothing;
'84 P-Bass Elite - super wide fretboard, heavy as an ocean liner, sustains for years;
2x '71 Musicmasters - one with rounds, one with flats. Both have brilliant necks;
'63 Bass VI. This is jaw-droppingly fabulous (if you like that sort of thing). Sounds great with a little bit of palm muting.

Re: What Fender bass do you prefer?
i never have been happy with p-basses,even when they sound great! i just prefer the flexibility in the jazz 2 pickup system,esp. the rear pickup solo'd.,prefer the jazz body contours,and like the slimmer neck of the jazz,at least if it is an unbound dot/rosewood neck. for some reason,maple/block/bound necks "seem" excessively narrow at the nut to me......mustangs are pretty cool,but i don't really get on well with any short-scale basses,so.....
Re: What Fender bass do you prefer?
I have a American Deluxe Jazz Bass and I love it; it's nice and light and has active electronics. I recently bought a P Bass Special, which has a Jazz neck, and a Jazz pickup at the bridge, and is also active. That is also fun to play as well. I happen to like the gold pickguard on the P Bass Special, really sweet! Mine is just like this one over at Elderly's (Navy Blue Metallic):

File this under...
WHY THE HELL DID I SELL THIS ONE?
I'd love to get it back, I've been looking for another ever since.
I LOVED the feel & look, not too keen on the pickups, but looking back....I could have swapped them out easily enough....

I really like the Jaguar bass. I'd buy one if white or the burst were readily available in the US.

The P/J is a real bass and not some afterthought. I love them! You get the thump with a touch of snarl.

Yeah, I can say I've thought that. A P didn't offer enough difference from my Ricks to make it worth it.1965 wrote:Word.tennis_nick wrote:I find pretty much anything can sound like a Precision. It's not hard. Only a Jazz bass sounds like a JAzz

If I could get a sunburst Jaguar bass, I'd deal with the tapered J style neck which I really don't like.
Since I don't like the Jazz bass neck, I prefer the Precision bass over the Jazz Bass.

Re: What Fender bass do you prefer?
John, that one reminded me of a '75 Fender Jazz Bass that a friend of mine had bought new that year, so seeing it really bought me back to that time in my life. The price wasn't too bad either. Plenty of signs that day telling me not to get it, don't you think!?!
It worked out well that didn't get it, since I got the Blueburst Cii instead.

Okay, so the dog attacked you, but the Jazz had no dead spots!rickenbrother wrote:John, that one reminded me of a '75 Fender Jazz Bass that a friend of mine had bought new that year, so seeing it really bought me back to that time in my life.
