Paul Weller's Rickenbacker up for auction at Christies

Post by wrattej »

One of Paul Weller’s Rickenbacker guitars from his time in The Jam is going under the hammer at the Christies Pop and Rock Memorabilia sale in London on 10th July 2008. The guitar that’s being auctioned is the “I AM NOBODY” fireglo Rickenbacker 330 which Paul used on the 1977 tour of the USA, including a gig at the iconic CBGB’s in New York City. This month’s Mojo magazine features a great picture of Paul and the Rickenbacker at the CBGB’s gig (the guitar at this stage didn’t have I AM NOBODY scratched on it – this came a little later). Paul also used the guitar on the Top of the Pops recording of “This is the Modern World” as well as on the German TV promo of “Strange Town”. Both clips are on YouTube. The guitar also features on one of the double page photographs of The Jam in the booklet that accompanies the “Direction, Reaction, Creation” box-set.

The guitar was originally acquired directly from The Jam on 15th August 1980 during the recording sessions of the “Sound Affects” album at the Townhouse Studios, London

Was that the tour they did with Blue Oyster Cult? What a trip those gigs must have been.

Could be more like 10? I know what you mean though Scott, I like my guitars to be virgins. I don't mind a knock or two, as long as I did it.

Worse case is a brand new guitar from a shop...with buckle rash. Hate that.
