8 string musings

Post by ram »

It’s been a while but I finally got a little snippet of the 4004L8. We were playing with some mics last night and had a little time. Nothing fancy just a few strings to show what it sounds like. Hope you enjoy.

This is my guitarist’s site (one of 'em). Just scroll down to The8 (picture of the headstock).

The HB pickups seem to be made for 8 strings I wonder if Rickenbacker should copy your prototype?

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. Eden, I think, if Ric ever does do an 8 again the 4004 should be given careful consideration. I probably should have done a sweep on the tone knob – there is such a wide range! As said before the 4004 is a tonal monster. This bass is quickly becoming my favorite to play. Not everything sounds better on it but alot sure does – especially playin in a three piece band. Joey, thanks for the playin comment.

Strings (incase anyone is interested) - I tried S.I.T, GHS & D’Addario (custom set) – while the SIT & GHS are great sounding and come in 8 string sets, I still think I like the D’Addarios better (the feel and they sound a tad brighter to my ear). So it was D’Addario XLs custom set 90/45 70/35 55/25 40/20. D’Addario does have an 8 string set but too heavy gauge.

I think if RIC ever does an 8 string bass again, it will be an 8 string version of the 4004Cii. That would be very cool.

Classy playing, Tom :D

I'm not a bass player, and I find it a bit difficult, but 8 string bass has to be a tough instrument to play !!

Tom, very nice! You are getting great, clear tone - I was surprised the HB1s would do that. Nice playing - tasteful.

Thanks guys! Shane, it’s really not all that difficult. I actually have more problems picking with the right hand and the double strings the fingering them with the left. This bass does do one thing much like a Telecaster. If you play sloppy you heard it. Like John said a very clear tone. Very bright and out there.

Hi Tom :D

I have right hand problems playing my 360/12. When playing a pair its not uncommon for me to hit just one string. Very annoying but practise will overcome. Then again maybe I could develop a new style for 12 string leads,........if I could only do it deliberatley !!! :D
