Tom, in no way am I trying to diminish this awesome thing you and Dane have created, I'm a player of a Hamer 12 string bass and I love the 8's too...just trying to get everyone's brain percolating with other thoughts, is all. Was just kind of joking about someone making a Rick 12 string bass, and it got a little carried away, is all :)

I think a 12-string 4004 is very do-able. It would be a bit tricky on the headstock design, but there might be enough room at the nut for 12 strings. What's the dimension athe the nut and bridge on your 12ver Steve?

Dane, my 12er neck is 2" wide at the nut. Additionally, the distance from the center of the end machine head to the center of the neck machine head on both sides of the headstock is 5 5/8". Just glancing at it, using your method of 4-2-5ing (where you extend the upper headstock shoulder an inch or so back) on both the upper and lower wings may get just enough space without having to extend the cresting end of the headstock.

With only 1 3/4" at the nut to work with, making a 12ver out of a 4004 might not be possible without major surgury. One option might be a "poor man's 12ver", a 9 sring bass. Three courses of only the E,A and D strings, or even a 9er based on B,E and A fundamentals. It would be realatively easy to design a headstock for this and add a single string. I also think it may be possible to do a 10 string based on a 5 string conversion on a 4004.

My Hamer is a 2" nut also, and the distance from the first tuning peg (one of the octave E strings) to the top bass A string tuner post is 5 1/4" center to center.

I got the joke ... putting 12 strings on a Ric bass neck is a joke ...

Steve I always thought that a 12 string bass should be tuned DGCF ...

Speaking of 8, 10, and 12 string basses...When I was at Ed Roman's a couple weeks ago I saw a bass that made me think of Jeff Rath...a 15 stringer! I meant to take a photo but I don't think I did. Not sure who made it. Some boutique builder.

Actually mine is now tuned down a half step for the band I am playing with, another reason I need string tension!!

Normally a nice 4004Cii would go for at least $1500.00+, but since this trans blue one was modified the way it was, it didn't even meet it's reserve the first time around on Ebay. The seller apparently didn't get the message since he started it out at the high bid from last time with yet a higher reserve. It's also got the structurally more stable 1" pickup spacing for the neck pickup.

This bass almost went through the 8 string conversion using Dane's new headstock design.

Still a possibility, I guess.

“Tom, in no way am I trying to diminish..”

Steve, I wasn’t offended and I hope you weren’t – rereading my post the tone doesn’t sound quite as I had intended… haste makes waste I guess.

I did think you were serious thou about the 12 – I recalled the picture of the Hamer wasn’t sure that was your or not (now I know). I have always wondered what it sounds like; you have any sound bites of it?

I am definitely not a specialist when it comes to adding strings on necks… I leave that to the real technicians. I do think that if it were doable the 4004 would be the one to do it to sound wise… but you may need a tripod to rest the head on.

Joey – that would look cool… we could do a three sisters picture….

but you already have a 4003s8 – right?
