All depends on how heavy your burden is.

Fascinating stuff, Paul.

Can I ask a favor, please make sure to always post a “before” picture, before the stripping and everything so we can see what it looked like?

Thanks!

After seeing your post, Paul, I had to check the date to see what day it was. Nope, that was 24 days ago....

Which reminds me, you only have 8 more shopping months before Christmas.

G'Day Paul,

If I understand correctly the celluloid binding you are waiting on cannot be delivered by air freight? If I've got this right..., what is in its composition that makes it a no no for air travel? Why do I ask..... My ric 360/12 has been around the globe a few times...and I think it would have celluloid bind (it was built in 1997). Anyway I did not get asked about it....ever.

Hope this 360F has some update pic's soon. Was great to see how the CB Binding takes shape. :D These guitars (Billet of traditional type???) are used by the front man of Aussie group "You Am I" Tim Rogers with an elaborate percussion attack style. Unfortunately there is a rumour that these guitars are Fakenbackers. I hope that's not true.

Cheers,

Si.....

Here's a picture showing how far it's come...we're ready to radius and glue up the new fretboard...

Image

I've posted this one in my topic section on the RIC factory Forum. I'll bring this section up to date soon, as I'm working on other projects as I write this.

The entire thread can be found here:

http://www.rickenbacker.com/forum_view_ ... 20PAUL%20W!

There's also a triple-pickup V64 which I'm just completing, and a mahogany burst 370/12 with CB back binding that I just shipped to Canada.

The celuloid is classified as a "solid explosive" by the DOT here in the USA. A five-pound quantity such as I typically buy, can cause quite a stir if it was touched off. Once I touched a small piece of celluloid binding to a disc sander a bit too aggressively, and watched as the end seemed to disappear--it was burning with an invisible flame. Water quenched it. I use more care now. Celluloid scrapings can explode.

The celluloid on a guitar is still dangerous, but spread out over the large surface, of the instrument, enclosed in a case, and kept from flame, it'll be OK. I imagine that, in a fire, the binding is the first to go, and the tailpiece last...

Your '97 has ABS binding, I believe. I don't know when RIC went away from celluloid, but it was long before 1997.

The guitars that Tim plays are made by Oz luthier Piers Crocker, and are affectionately known as "Crockenbackers" They are most assuredly counterfeits, with their odd hardware including Gretsch tailpieces. I've spoken to Piers in the past...nice fellow; I think he was unaware of RIC's position on trade dress violation when he built them. They look like Fs, but are a couple of inches smaller in width, judging from these photos...a real F is a sewer cover, size-wise.

I'd jump at the chance to get one of those Crockenbackers, money permitting of course.RIC will never make them.

Its the only way i'll ever get a 360F 8)

It's gonna cost you a Light Show, Graham.

The two parties in that Crockenbacker deal are both in violation of RIC's trade dress ownership.

$4K? That's really cheap for all that work...and all that risk, too.
