Welcome and congrats, Jacque!
I am actually a 6- and 12-string guitarist and just a hack bass player ... but the beauty of Rickenbacker basses grabbed me and has not let go:

It's a pickup. And one that I would seriously consider getting if I were you. I got my toaster the same day I got my 4003, but didn't fit it straight away. The sound of the bass as it was with the original hi-gain pickup was beautiful. About a year later I decided to give it a try, and I honetly wish I had put it on the day I got it. Absoluteley amazing sound. I very much doubt I will ever use the other pickup again. Here's a link:basjac wrote:Thank you for such a warm welcoming. Now the learning curve begins. What's a toaster?

Now get a pickguard with the 1/2" spacing and do the minor routing needed to make it all fit.StoneRose wrote:...I honetly wish I had put it on the day I got it. Absoluteley amazing sound. I very much doubt I will ever use the other pickup again. Here's a link:

All right already, stop making it seem that every bass needs xyz mods!

Re: New 4003 Natural color
Jacque, the difference between the toaster and the high gain you have now is in the refinement of the sound. The high gains have a bar magnet under the coil, more windings on that coil, and are more aggressive and thus muddy the tone a bit. The toaster is a lighter wind of copper and uses alnico5 magnet rods for poles and though the tone is of the same flavor as the high gain, it offers refinement to the notes. I had a hard time discerning the different notes from G# to the open E with the high gain, but with the toaster each note sounded unique.

I finally was able to take my Ric to the beach and crank the volume. (I live in an apartment and apparently my bass even at low volumes bubbles and slids through the entire complex needless to say the property manager is always knocking on my door) I was afraid that my husband's tele and my son's gretsch would lose me in the sound. Ha ha I slid out beautifully right underneath there feet and they ended up blown each other out. It was a fabulous day! I just can't go over the sound and how it cuts right through electric guitars. Awesome! Jacque
