I think when they say "This is it, the last tour" they always mean it.
And that's the trouble with predicting your own future. How do you know how you'll feel three years from now??

There was a Who biography on TV over the weekend, I believe it's the Official Who Anthology. Lot's of gloves off comments, and some of the fistfight recollections are hilarious.
Basically toured near the end of Entwhistle's days cause John was in financial straights.
Anywho, I believe this Anthology is new (I've seen others) and now being sold. Long, about 2.5 hours, but very good.

I suppose that I should not be too surprised at this revelation. absolutely one of my favorite bands,from the "live at leeds" period onward,yet i never saw them in concert-that is totally weird! 5:15 remains my favorite who track of all time.....

I love the Who. Got into them last year when I first heard "My Generation". I thought they were good, but I didn't become a fan 'til I heard "I Can't Explain", "Substitute" and "The Kids Are Alright".

Obviously, I am a Who fan, and had the opportunity to finally see them live the tour before Entwistle died, at the Irvine Meadows Ampitheatre in California. What a phenominal show, and Pete's lead playing certainly kicked *** over so many of his contemporaries that are known as "lead" players. I had missed their first farewell tour(I think)with the Clash supporting in Los Angeles back in the early 80s due to illness, and had always regretted that. Oddly enough, I was never able to see them for whatever reason untill this show, and am thankfull I got to see it.
I was also a Clash fan(not really the "Combat Rock" album) and thought they would be around for a while, as they were finally successful financially. Funny how when you're young you think, oh well, just see them next time around.
As far as the Who selling out, they took that **** on themselves in the 60s with their "sell out" album. They always did what they wanted to do, and tried to push the envelope further with orchestration and musical styles. Selling out is such a over used ridiculous term. I've heard people complaining about players who finally get better gear referred to as "sell outs." The punk community is by far the worst, because any degree of success including actually getting paid for a gig is "selling out". If you're playing what you want to play and doing what you want to do, what is it you're "selling out?"
Sure, in this world of manufactured bands and performers who don't write their own music dominating the charts in all genres, the state of "popular" music is definitely in the dumpster. This is what FM radio was supposed to fix, but are now worse than AM ever was. Selling out, I've come to believe, is the term folks hold on to when the "lesser known" band they like gets a hit, or grows and has some finacial success.
Anyways, back to the Who, one of the greatest bands ever, who wrote such different types of songs that some you love, and others you don't. That to me is what's so great about them, they weren't afraid to try new things, and not everything had to have the "this a hit" seal of approval on it.
I think they certainly set the bar for what a rock band should strive for. Everyone an individual, but together, an unstoppable force.I much prefer them to the Stones(especially anything post Brian Jones)and would have given anything to see them in the 60s with the Move and the Creation, who I also prefer to the Stones. Don't get me wrong, I like the Stones, but have just never been amazed by them. The Beatles were great(no kidding), but I would still rather listen to the Who. I was born 20 years too late, and on the wrong side of the atlantic, but must have been there in a past life to love this stuff so much. The Kinks are another great band that should have had greater success than they did.

I am a Who fan and always have been. I only got to see them live twice in the 60's but they had a profound effect on my taste in music and my guitar and bass playing.
As a consequence, I really enjoyed reading your "two cents worth".

Thank you Brian, you and Scotty should get a big laugh out of this. When I was a very young teenager, I got a Union Jack to sew on the back of my parka, and took a sharpie and spent quite a long time writing The Who in the cross like logo where "The" was verticle, and "Who" was horizontal, both words sharing the "H".
After I got finished, I proudly held up my custom work of art, ready to sew it on my parka when I noticed I had spelled "Tho Whe". 
Needless to say, that made it into the trash and I made dork Mod of the year. If we cannot laugh at ourselves, than perhaps a high colonic is in order.
