Tom Petty/Mike Campbell Ric collection

Post by JakeK »

After the release of the Mudcrutch album, the Runnin' Down a Dream DVD/book, the countless live shows and all the music videos, I think I have a rough estimate of how many Rics Tom Petty and Mike Campbell own. If you know of any others, or I'm missing out on some, please let me know.

Tom:
70's 362/12 JG
'65/'66 360/12NS MG
'65 365OS FG
'86 1997TP FG
'91 660/12TP FG
'88 370/12RM MG
'65 1993/12 FG
'73 4001 JG
'06/'07 4001C64

Mike:
'63 620/12 FG
'66 360/12NS FG
'90 350MC JG

Unknown:
60's 4005 MG
'06/'07 325C64
'06 1996AFG

That's as much as I can think of. Again, if you know of any others, or I'm missing out on some, please let me know

Tom played the black 325 in ending credits of the Simpsons episode "How I Spent My Strummer Vacation (2002)," which I think probably confirms it as a v63, unless he somehow got a prototype or something.

Tom Petty is reported to own upwards of 125 guitars, Mike Campbell 500+, so we may never know the true extent of their collections.

I remember Tom mentioning he bought a 6-string 4005 in a VG article on him last year or so.

That is not a 325, but a 615 modified to look like a 325, owned by Mike probably, and played by the two of them.

I've still got that issue.
I was saving for that 6 string 4005 (priced at the time around 10 grand) and then he went and bought it!

Tom's probably got so many vintage Rics in his collection, he doesn't know what do to with some!

This thread brings up the '65 RM1993 that Tom played at the Super Bowl. I remember reading here that it was part of the private collection at Norman's Rare Guitars. It baffles me how Tom was able to get it, if Norm wouldn't sell it to anyone else (I read something about that, too).

Shortly after the Super Bowl, when I talked to a musician, he/she would say, "Did you see that Rickenbacker 12-string Tom Petty played at the Super Bowl? Didn't look like any 360/12 I've seen before!" and I'd explain to him/her about Rose Morris, and how that was their special 12-string. I also told them that Pete Townshend was famous for it, and Tom was probably glad he bought one that Pete Townshend DIDN'T destroy.

Does anyone know anything about a Guacamoleglo Rick mandolin that I saw Mike Campbell playing on VH1 Classic last night? This was a most unique mandolin as it was shaped like a 330 with slash hole, the usually shaped pickguard with controls for two pickups, Accent vibrato, and different looking pickups than I have ever seen on a Rick. Very cool! 8) :D

It was built for him...by who, I have NO earthly idea.

What about that capri 330 with Bigsby that was on the same program? I noticed it had the strangest tailpiece. A Bigsby mounted to a trapeze...

Here's a ****** pic of the 330 mando I took on my iphone at the LA Troubadour Mudcrutch show ... sorry for the poor quality, but you can see the color and shape. It's a very cool axe.

RIC should make those. I think that mandolin looks great, but I am not too partial to the Avacadoglo finish.

BTW, Mike looks a bit like a young Jerry Garcia in that photo.

Bacon & Day talk about an unusual 360/6OS made for Tom in the '80s:

"Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers had long championed the Rickenbacker cause, and an official association with Petty and the group's lead guitarist Mike Campbell began in 1987 when informal discussions were opened concerning some custom guitars for the two musicians. Dick Burke and Brian Carmen subsequently built Petty an unusual solid maple old-style 360. This fulfilled Petty's desire for a six-string that looked like the 12-string George Harrison played, as well as one that would not feed back, as the semi-acoustics are prone to do. The disadvantage for Petty was the necessary weightlifting course."
