Just to throw one more option in the mix, after trying, (and buying), approx 14 different dirt pedals, I've settled happily with an EBS Valve Drive. It can be set from very mild gain, all the way to serious grind, and has two distinct voices, as well as a 3 band passive eq. Not cheap, but worth every penny. Very natural tube saturation, makes my 4003 growl through an Ampeg V4BH. I highly recomend it to any of you still seeking "that" sound.

To give another opinion: I was dissapointed with the one I tried. I liked the EBS multidrive way better. I tried them next too eachother via an Aquilar transistor amplifier and I just didnt like the valvedrive. It seemed as there wasnt any brightnes/presence (which I like when I overdrive my Fender 6L6 amps). I must admit my strings where too old but the multidrive did way better.alan wrote:Just to throw one more option in the mix, after trying, (and buying), approx 14 different dirt pedals, I've settled happily with an EBS Valve Drive.

Re: The perfect distortion pedal!
yes it is.
I got to play the new pedalboard with my band. It is like having 4 amps. The VT bass gives me an ampeg svt 810 big sound. The MXR bass di + gives me the super clean Eden type sound. The bass pod gives me the sound of the ampeg flip top amp with a rat distortion pedal. And the Marshall Guv,nor gives me the classic marshall sound. Then I played my jazz bass with the East j-retro peramp into it. With that setup I can get pretty much any sound I can imagine. I was getting a sound similar to the Entwistle sound from Kids are alright where he played Baba O'Riley, and Won't get fooled again. I will have to try the east preamps on more of my basses.

Sounds like a great pedalboard.
