ISO: Old Vox amp ( Berkeley II or III, Viscount ..... )

Post by digam11 »

I`ve been searching all the usual sites for used gear and thought I`d just post a heads up here. ( hope this allowed )

Looking for an old Vox amp. I`ve had a Berkeley II or III in mind for a while. One of the members here sold one just when I started searching recently so I just missed it...can`t remember the name. It was in great shape for a very good price.

Don`t have a ton to spend but am looking for one in pretty good shape. Uncle George`s "bonus check" will be here soon.

Again, if anyone happens to see one in their neighborhood or in a used ad or something and isn`t interested in it themselves I`d appreciate a shout.

I`m in MA just about 1/2 way between Prov, RI and Boston.

Thanks, Mike.

There had been a Vicount listed on Craigslist in Maine for $600 a month ago. I notice he pulled the ad, so maybe it was sold. There is an outside chance that I still have an email from him on my home PC. I could check tonight if you are interested.

Sure Frank, if you can find it please send it along . I `d appreciate it.

I just saw a Buckingham on E bay w/ a starting bid of $100. Head needs a bit of work on the tremelo from what the seller says. Has the trolley and looks pretty good. I`m going to ask some questions and ask for some more pics.

Thanks again, Mike.

My first new amp was a SS Berkeley III back in '76. Bought it at Biasco Music on Belmont Ave. in Chicago. It sounded OK in the store to my 18-year-old ears. Our first gig after that was a frat party at Northwestern U, in the frat house basement, real Animal House scene. The amp could not be heard.

I shoulda got the Super Reverb I demoed...

Stay away from the SS Berkeleys. The tube ones are screamers. Every single one I saw on Ebay in a year of searching was either trashed or incomplete (missing the stand, usually). The bent control panel always collects edge-dings, too.

I got tired of looking, and finally went to Gary at NCM and he made me a 100W SS '66Royal Guardsman catalog replica. It's terrific, although I use my blonde Dual Showman on gigs.

I`ve come across a couple more, one pretty banged up and another that went out of my budget range.

Again....the search continues

I have an old Series 90 that I want to get rid of, but it's not working, and has no speakers in the cabinet. Cosmetically, it looks pretty good. I was thinking of having it repaired, but I'm not sure if I want to go to the trouble for an amp I probably won't play.

Here's more about SS Vox amps: http://www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/v ... oxprot.htm

Close up of the preamp control panel:

Closeup of the power amp control panel, which is on the back side of the speaker cabinet. the preamp plugs into the power amp via an odd pin plug that looks just like the end of a vacuum tube, and plugs into the tube socket type jack input on the left side of the power amp control panel pictured below. The power amp is mounted in the bottom of the speaker cabinet. It's one of the weirdest amps I've ever seen:

Here is an overall view of the rear cabinet/power amp. The cabinet originally had the chrome tilt trolley mounted to it, but a previous owner removed this and mounted casters on the bottm. Repros are available from North Coast Music. Actually, every cosmetic part, along with the schematics, are all available from North Coast:

Thanks for the pics.

Cool looking amp but to first of all, get it here then put 4 speakers in it and then fix the head

I`ll have to pass but again, thanks for the time to put up the pics.

Mike
