I'm in the market for a pre-CBS P-bass, and I prefer refins or stripped basses. Ideally the original pickup will be there (re-wind OK) and as much of the electronics as possible. Of course, the more original parts the better, but refins are still ideal for price reasons.
Anyone have any places to recommend checking out? Good Guys Guitars has a couple solid candidates, but nothing quite perfect for me (the refin '58 looks awesome but is out of my price range). I'm interested in dealers who aren't pricing refins near the originals.
I'm thinking 3k is a reasonable budget for this quest, based on what I've seen -- less for basses with multiple replacement parts. Anyone have any leads?

Why'd you decide against the stripped '64/'65, Jake?
Re: looking for a pre-cbs precision refin
It sounds like the pickup is non-original, and the price is a little high -- I haven't decided against it for sure, though. Did you see my post on talkbass? I love the way those old, beat-up, stripped p-basses look.sloop_john_b wrote:Why'd you decide against the stripped '64/'65, Jake?

I did; it's really amazing how many of these instruments were refinished, routed, had their electronics swapped, etc.jakeox wrote: It sounds like the pickup is non-original, and the price is a little high -- I haven't decided against it for sure, though.
