Today in Rock history
Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” entered the singles chart in 1957. It was Jerry Lee Lewis’ first hit single, and eventually made it to number 3. It was followed by “Great Balls of Fire,” “Breathless,” “High School Confidential” and “What’d I Say,” all released on the Sun label.
In 1961, Ricky Nelson’s, “Travellin’ Man” climbed back up to the top to spend its second week at number 1, displacing Roy Orbison’s, “Running Scared.” It would be Nelson’s last number 1 hit, although he would have another half dozen hits make the top 10.
The Dave Clark Five set an appearance record for the Ed Sullivan Show in 1966. It was their twelfth performance, underlining the fact that the band was far more popular in the U.S. than in their home country.
A peace rally was held in 1982, in New York’s Central Park. Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Gary U.S. Bonds and others performed in front of half a million people. Bonds had just released his new On the Line album, the follow-up to 1981’s, Dedication. Both LPs were backed by Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band.
Ray Charles dug deep into his pocketbook in 2001. He presented Albany State University with a cheque for $1 million. Another million would follow in a year’s time, in honour of Charles’ mother, Retha Robinson. The university had set plans to name a theatre after Robinson, and would also later grant Charles an honorary doctorate degree in philosophy.

Also today in history the song "Back in My Arms Again" by the Supremes topped the charts and stayed there for a week. (1965)
Which brings me on nicely to another What were the Supremes originally known as?

Here's a little trivia: Besides being contemporaries in the London Punk scene of the mid 70's, what is the link between the Sex Pistols and the Slits?
Edit: the site in the above link can be touchy, so an mp3 of Love Hurts can be downloaded here: http://rapidshare.com/files/122041317/L ... _.mp3.html

Re: Rock and Roll Trivia
It's Paul Cook.
The man in question is Edwin Collins. His band previous to his solo career was Orange Juice but I have no idea what their big hit was. They were virtually unknown over here.

What song did Townshend say this about? "It's the most clumsy piece of writing I've ever done" yet it went on to be a huge success for The Who.
