Suzi Quatro? She of tiny stature, leather biker garb and low-slung P-bass.

A top-notch glam-rocker (or is that an oxymoron?) and an intelligent and articulate woman to boot. So cool that Audi named a car after her!

+1 to that. Bill Murry and the guys in the band couldn't keep their hands off her and I don't blame them one bit.

Only one person mentioned Joan Jett? She's definitely the top of my list. While not a lot of the ladies on my list are legends, I do think the deserve a lot of credit for getting as far as they have. There needs to be more women in rock.

And speaking of Karen Carpenter, there was an earlier lady drummer. I can't remember her name, but she played drums in a San Francisco based group called The Vejtables. This was in the mid-'60s when the just weren't any lady drummers. I believe she wrote this song, too.

Lots of good choices already mentioned, but for me, it's Johnette Napolitano, bassist & lead vocalist for Concrete Blonde.

Not my fave by a long shot but Cher has to be mentioned if for nothing else but her perserverance and longevity in the business (not to mention her long legs and beautiful see through apparel) and Tina Turner deserves way more than a passing mention.

Absolutely, positively, without a doubt, JOAN JETT. Putting "I love rock and roll aside" because it's such an obviously overplayed hit, her records kick butt! Great guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. Very under rated, and almost considered a novelty(what a crime!)she epitomizes what 3 chord rock and roll should be. I saw her with the Kinks in the mid 80s, and she tore it up, doesn't just stand there just looking pretty, she rocks with the best of 'em. Like everybody, some albums are better than others, but those first bunch were smoking. Much better, IMHO, than anything the Runaways did as a band , or after as soloists.

Kim from the Fastbacks, the best band that came out of that whole Seattle deal and never made it, in my and many others opinion. Lead vocals and killer pbass, she brought it. Lu Lu, the rhythm guitar player and singer rocked it out as well. Their lead guitar player, songwriter, and engineer Kurt Bloc, is one of the most insane guitar players I've ever seen live, and can play his *** off. It is a crime they never "made it" and now play in different bands. Definitely worth checking out with their 2 girl harmony vocals and 60s pop sensibility meets powerpop/punk/hard rock music.

Blondie has that certain something that really does it for me, songs like "dreaming" and "X offender" are really special to me. Don't like all of her stuff, but what I do like, I really like.

Wendy o Williams-RIP-hell of a stuntwoman and a rocker to the end.

Sylvia Juncosa(hope I spelled that right)certainly rocks with an insane fluidity and virtuosity. Seen her live a few times-wow.

Becky Bondage of Vice Squad, still a hottie and had the priveledge of supporting them a few times. She's still rockin'!

The bangles, saw them during the whole "paisley underground"scene that was going on in Los Angeles in the early 80s(have to mention the Pandoras if I bring that up). Loved the out of print EP, and the "All over the place" Album, but after that I completely lost interest in their direction. I like a few of their later songs,"Hazy shade of winter" cover and "In my room", but not much else. I much prefered their 60s type deal.

I like the Donnas first album, but haven't heard any others.

+1 on Nina Hagen, she certainly does her own thing!
