4001C64 MG
Since I feel dirty unless I have at least 3 items on order at Rickenbacker, I ordered a 4001C64MG today from John at Old Boise. That will give me 3 items on order. (4003 & 5002V58).
I ordered this bass because once Paul finishes my MMT bass and this comes in, I will have just about every version of Paul's bass from beginning to today. I'm such a geek!!!

Yes you are!!!
Congrats Brian. With two of your "on orders" you'll have plenty of time to save.

Congrats, Brian
You're making me feel like I should put two more basses on order with RIC.

When was Paul's bass MG? I'm aware of the original FG, the MMT paint job, and the sanded look, but AFAIK the bass was never MG.simer4001 wrote:...I ordered a 4001C64MG today from John at Old Boise....

I'm not sure if I am understanding your question properly but if I am this is what I know. Paul had the MMT paint stripped off in 1969. I had heard that it was done by a man in Soho with Paul being present. The bass still had it's horns intact. Here is a picture I have with the bass refinished and the horns still intact.
Somewhere between this picture and 1971/72 (?) he sanded it down to what he has today. With the rounded horns. The C64 Mapleglo would be the equivalent of the bass in the posted photograph.

Maybe Jeff means it is missing the Glo(w) becasuse of the sanding.simer4001 wrote:Somewhere between this picture and 1971/72 (?) he sanded it down to what he has today. With the rounded horns. The C64 Mapleglo would be the equivalent of the bass in the posted photograph.

Do you also have a Hofner, Yamaha, Wal, 4004C (I believe he has one of these..per JH)?
The first 4004C was indeed a left-handed instrument, since I intended this only as a Christmas gift for Paul.

Cool. I knew there was an in-between phase where the horns weren't rounded, but I didn't know whether the bass was glossy or stripped. I always assumed it was stripped.simer4001 wrote:I'm not sure if I am understanding your question properly but if I am this is what I know. Paul had the MMT paint stripped off in 1969. What if Paul's bass was stripped in that photo? Would you strip your new C64 to match?
Any who, congrats on your order of a sweet bass!

Yes!berth wrote: Maybe Jeff means it is missing the Glo(w) becasuse of the sanding. So the color would be just M instead of MG.
I know, I know...I'm a "details" freak. But it does kinda bug me when someone calls a 4001C64S Mapleglo. It isn't Mapleglo. It's a satin sealer finish. Mapleglo is glossy!
Not tryin' to bug you Brian. I know you didn't commit the above faux pas, I'm just sayin'...
And now I'm curious...Did Paul's bass sport some sort of mapleglo-esque finish in the above photo or was it sanded to bare wood?

Re: 4001C64 MG
The boys were going through a "bare wood" phase on their guitars at the time (John & George's Epi Casinos and John's Gibson acoustic, even Ringo started using a natural maple Ludwig kit), so I'd say there was no finish on it.rickaddict wrote: And now I'm curious...Did Paul's bass sport some sort of mapleglo-esque finish in the above photo or was it sanded to bare wood?

Yes, I have a Cavern bass, a V62 and a Deluxe Hofner. I have a Yamaha BB1200 and a 4004C. I had a WAL 5 string.atomic_punk wrote:Do you also have a Hofner, Yamaha, Wal, 4004C (I believe he has one of these..per JH)?

Sounds like quite the Paul bass collection.
I get a kick out of some of the different collections people have on this forum. There's just so many things that people are interested in that result in these diverse collection ideas:
-Brian's Paul McCartney bass collection
-Mark's transitional '73 4001 collection
-Dave Pascoe's doubleneck collection
-Andy (or Vince's) 60's bass collections ...etc.
What other collections am I missing?

Some guy in Canada has a bunch of Sea Greens, J-Dog's got a bunch of old Tulips, Graham's got the monopoly on F bodies, to name a few.rickaddict wrote:Sounds like quite the Paul bass collection.
