I Interviewed Roger McGuinn today!

Post by drumbob »

I interviewed Roger today for just over and hour for an upcoming aricle in Premier Guitar magazine, the November issue to be exact. Roger was extremely friendly, witty, gracious, and forthcoming about his equipment, the music industry, the Internet, his Janglebox, and why he won't do a Byrds reunion tour. I won't reveal much more now, but look for it when it comes out, around mid-October.

Bob.....Now, that must have been one cathartic experience for you! Thanks for sharing your thoughts about it with us. Will be on the lookout for that issue down the road. Best regards.....Goofyfoot.

Can't wait to hear more, although a Byrds reunion would have been sweet.

Very cool. I kinda fell in love with Premier Guitar Magazine about a year ago when we started getting it at the music store I work at. It's easily my favorite guitar magazine. It's a lot more gear-oriented and a lot less ******-metal-head oriented. A lot of very interesting and educational articles. That is very cool that you're able to contribute. I'll be looking out for it.

Thanks for all the kind words. Premier Guitar has to be the classiest guitar mag on the planet. The first time I saw an issue, I decided I had to write for them. The June issue, which is on the stands now, has my first piece, an interview with Leslie West. I especially like the fact that there are never any idiotic metalheads featured, no flavors of the month, and no fad-oriented ****. It's a high end gear magazine for the discerning guitarist. If you're into the pursuit of tone, Premier Guitar is THE magazine for you.

On top of that, they're great people to work for. When the June issue appeared in mid May, I had a check in my mailbox two days later! And they pay me very, very well for my work. They're letting me choose my own interview subjects too. I couldn't be happier.

I will tell you all one thing about Roger McGuinn and compression on the Rick 12: the use of compression in the studio was not Roger's idea. A staff engineer at Columbia Records, used compression because he was afraid The Byrds would blow out their recording gear! Roger said Columbia had virtually no experience with rock bands when The Byrds started recording.

I am currently reading Grateful Dead Gear by Blair Jackson; it seems the Dead had some interesting recording sessions in their early years, too, regarding engineers/producers and this new-fangled sound!

Bob , thanks for the heads up on the interview. It`ll be right at the time I`m seeing McGuinn, yet again, up in NH.

Will he be on the cover ? If so , I`ll get him to sign my copy.

As far as Premier ... I`m really getting into this mag. Got a couple free back issues last year at the Boston Guitar Show and have subscribed ever since. The only two guitar mags I get are Premiere and Vintage Guitar.

Hey Bob,

Great you got to catch up with Roger. Did he say anything about his recent cameo with Springsteen?

I also look forward to seeing the whole piece. Thanks for the dangling carrots!

Mike..No, he won't be a cover subject. We always feature pictures of gear and/or the people who make the gear on the cover. As I said, the gear is the prime focus, not the personalities.

How very cool! Congrats Bob. I am really looking forward to seeing how you structured your question set and the responses you elicited from Roger.
