I'll agree with the latter (i.e., thinner), but most have carved tops now. Have you taken a look at the Washburn site, lately?
Notice in my post I said "typically." I realize that some Idols have the carved top while others do not. It appears that the lower-end models usually aren't carved while the mid to high-end models usually are, but some are not. Whether or not the body is carved really depends on the model of Idol.

Note that "carved" here (and in most cases where shaped tops are produced in series) refers to a CNC rough-shaped piece, which is then machine- and hand-sanded to bring the surface to final finish for painting.

I have spoken to Dennis Fano a few times regarding an interview for Premier Guitar, and he was unwilling to participate. I think he's either shy or afraid that he wouldn't be able to keep up with demand. His guitars go for under $2K, more like $1600+, and every one I've seen has been relic'd. He makes one that's a cross between a Telecaster and a Les Paul Special. Dennis is a former resident of Bloomfield, NJ, my hometown, but he recently moved his operation and family to PA.

As a journalist, I can't understand why anyone wouldn't want a story in a major guitar magazine, but Dennis was adamant. As hard as I tried, he kept refusing me.
