"That Thing You Do" guitar
What happened to the 360/12v64 used in this movie? Was it borrowed or not? Video posted below

Re: "That Thing You Do" guitar
Maybe Liv Tyler took it home
Good question. It was probably rented, along with the rest of the gear, from a prop house, music dealer, or private owner/collector who does that sort of thing for movie and TV period pieces. A huge chunk of that movie was shot in Orange County, either at the OC Fairgrounds, Old Town Orange, or Chapman University, so it was probably a local deal.
Example: I was once at a vintage music store in the Valley gawking at a vintage Jazzmaster that looked exactly like one of the guitars from the Church's "Under The Milky Way" video. It turned out that it was the actual guitar from the video, and the band had rented it for the video shoot. Likewise, there'a a recent Chili Peppers video that has one scene in which they're all playing Vox and Rickenbacker gear and in Beatle-ish outfits. That gear was all rented for the shoot as well.

Re: "That Thing You Do" guitar
JH posted that Tom Hanks owned a 360V64/12. Maybe it's his guitar.
Re: "That Thing You Do" guitar
Another thought is that one of the guitar dealers in the area, like Norman's supplied the gear. Nevertheless, good movie, great guitars.

I remember JH saying that the guitar was hanging in Tom Hanks' office.

That was a great movie and even though it was fictional; surprisingly enough it accurately depicted the state of the music industry back then. I did not know that Liv played guitar. It would not surprise me though if she did, since we all know who her father is.

That's a strong possiblity; the shop is famous, and close to the industry! The guitars were obviously all reissues, but those old Fender amps in the movie are the real deal. They could have come from Norman's, as could have the RI guitars. That's cool that the Ric belongs to Tom Hanks and it's in his office. I hope he keeps it set up and in tune.lennon211 wrote:Another thought is that one of the guitar dealers in the area, like Norman's supplied the gear. Nevertheless, good movie, great guitars.
I love that movie, and that everyone in the film actually learned to play their instruments.

The "voice" of That Thing You Do belongs to Mike Viola. A woefully underrated power pop guy. Some of the later stuff is hit or miss, but his early stuff was fantastic.

Love that movie too!

If it was shot in LA, there is a great chance it was loaned out by Norman's Rare Guitars in the San Fernando Valley.

Re: "That Thing You Do" guitar
The outside band scenes were shot at the OC Fairgrounds, while the inside auditorium scenes were shot at Chapman U. I imagine that the "Hollywood Showcase" scenes were shot somewhere in Burbank, or on one of the studio lots in Hollywood. The mid 60s exterior for that shot looked like one of the buildings at Loyola Marymount University in Westchester, but it's probably not it. The exterior Ambassador Hotel Scenes were shot, of course, at the Ambassador, or what was left of it at the time.

I believe that the instruments in that movie were provided by 'History for Hire' and Jim Elyea. I was fortunate enough to tour the place and meet Jim. I think the comment about the Rickenbacker & Tom Hanks is correct though...but the other instruments were from his prop house.
