660/12 Purpleburst

Post by wittyair »

Here it is folks......in all it's splendor and glory!!! This finish is amazing, quite different than the purple 350 I bought from Rickenbacker
a few months ago. Plenty of birds-eye on this guitar. The warranty card does indeed state 660/12 purple W/T. I'm not that familiar
with the 600 series so maybe some of you can help me out with this one. Are 660s supposed to have binding on front and back? Did they
have the humbuckers as standard issue back in the 90s? Any way you slice it, I think I've got quite a rare piece here. It would be wonderful
to find out the whole story.

Always binding only on the front, and never had humbuckers as "standard issue".

Gorgeous guitar, Craig!

Yep.......... about as 'non-standard' as you could get, I would think. Also has standard knobs and 'R' tailpiece.

But they forgot to put on a maple keck with dot inlays............

Congrats, Craig - she's a beauty!! :D

The story from the seller: Joe Perry put in a custom order for this guitar......The factory for some unknown reason, made 2 of 'em......some rich guy in SoCal gets this one as a B-day gift from the missus. Everything sure LOOKS factory......I'm not really up for tearing in to it. Is there any way to get any info out of Santa Ana???

I usually dry heave at the sight of a purpleburst, but this one fascinates me. The wood is exceptional and the dark edges of the fade lighten dramatically, drawing your eyes into the center. On a purple sunburst guitar, I just can't stand it when it's light and poofy on the edges. Too soft looking for my taste. I look at a sunburst and I want to hear a rock anthem playing in my head, not ballerina music! But then again, what do I know? Eric sprayed an Amber Greenburst a month ago and I was the only one in the factory that liked it (well, besides Kenny!)

That one got stripped to bare wood and refinished in a much sexier color. It may crop up somewhere one day (not Saturday).

It was more of an East L.A. lowriderburst unfortunately!

Here's an interesting comparison of the 2 purple Rickenbackers I have. I'm not quite sure how that happened......it's not
like I have a major purple jones or anything. I dont know how many purple guitars Rickenbacker has produced over the years
but I would have to guess that I am fortunate enough to have a rather sizeable percentage of them.
