Electronic Drum Kits

Post by marc61 »

Trying to get my kid a good electronic drum set.

He's come along way with his playing recently, and due to space and noise constraints, I hate to see him lose progress on learning.

Anyway, if anyone can point me in the direction of what they think might be an affordable, versatile kit for the kid, I'd appreciate it. Ask the drummers in your bands if you can, and of course any good leads on a used kit would be helpful.

Thanks!

I've got a Yamaha DTXplorer electronic kit that I like a lot. You can easily find them for under $1K. I got mine barely used for less than $500. The only knock on it is that all the pads are 1 zone, so you just get one sound per pad. I just use it for playing around in my apartment and for recording, and I'm not a great drummer, so I'm probably not the best judge.

I have a Yamaha DTXpress (the first version) that was used at last year's SoCalCon ... it seemed that Darren thought it was OK. I'd comment, but I'm even more of a hack drummer than I am a hack bass player ... :)

I had a Roland TD-7 kit way back in the late '90s to early '00s and it was great - and cheap now. There's one on ebay:http://cgi.ebay.com/ROLAND-TD-7-ELECTRO ... dZViewItem

I got a brand new Alesis with DM5 module brand new 2 years ago for $500. It does the job.

I bought a Roland TD3 kit for about $800 when I was taking drum lessons up in MD. I added a Roland keyboard amp and a mesh snare head a little later. Very versatile little kit IMO, quality stuff. Nice for practice obviously because you can play through the headset.

Roland makes an even less expensive entry level kit now which might be great for a kid.

This says touch sensitive pads, that's a good thing... I've tried out a few mostly Rolands at the local GC... would the one in this auction be a decent set? it looks good.

Mine had touch sensitive pads - the drum emulator "brain" did a fine job of processing different force levels both interms of volume and timbre. In addition the "snare" had a seperate rim trigger and the "cymbals" had a rim trigger that acted as a "choke" - you could grab the "cymbal" rim in mid crash as you would a real cymbal. For a recreational drummer or beginner it would be perfect. I've seen them used at low-level gigs to decent effect. The fact that there are multiple drum kit choices (though some are very cheesy) is huge plus. As has been said by other forumites, the headphone jack is a blessing.

I gave mine to a school-teacher friend when I left the UK to return to Oz. He is a drummer who had just got married and had sold his own kit to help set up the marital home - I miss it but I figured he would make far better use of it than me.

I'd ask the seller questions as to use - who, where, and how often - and condition. The pads are pretty robust but are still vulnerable to abuse. Like all ebay sales, the response you get from the seller will be a good guide as to whether you should get involved or not.

That's a nice set Jerry. The TD-7 is a more capable module than mine (TD3)--more sound options, etc., though I don't think it's in production anymore.

Looks like they might have added an additional floor tom. It doesn't have the more modern cymbal pads (which are capable of more realistic cymbal tones--bell, edge mute, etc..) The higher end Rolands use mesh head pads, which feel a little more like real drum heads. Nice thing is the module can accept the mesh heads if you decide you want to upgrade--this is what I did with my set, I added a mesh head for the snare.

The set Marc shows on Craigslist above is exactly like mine.

Anyone in this thread still shopping? Saw this one on another forum, looks like maybe a nice deal. No affiliation.

My younger brother is seriously considering going for the electronic option! He's doing a few property deals and will reward himself with part of the proceeds! As a consequence, he's given me his pearl drumkit! Now to learn the drums!
Anyone got a rough 22" bass drum(cheap)?? Needed for project!

I had a TD-6 for a while (Roland) and it was great....but after a while I just wanted more. I got a great deal on the TD-12, which is in the higher end but there's no way I'm outgrowing that thing anytime soon.

Always great values on craigslist....if I were to buy a new one, I'd start there.

Still shopping....

After bringing my son around and trying different kits he seems to like this one:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=444814

The thing he enjoys the most is the hi hat as it's more "realistic" than any other kit in it's price range. To me it also sounds better than any Roland kits in the same league price wise.I keep looking, and hope to find a deal on a used one soon. Any leads appreciated.
