Direct recording of my two Rics
Because there isn't really a topic for just recordings of our Rics...
I like the V63 better than the 4001 '78.
Maybe I'm gonna sell the '78 and buy a new JG with Full Width inlays.
I presume a '78 is less worth in $$ than a new JG?

Re: Direct recording of my two Rics
Philip, great comparison! And one of my absolute favorite bass breaks of all time!
I've gotta tell ya....the Geddy Jazz sounds pretty good...might have to get one of those...for 1/3 of the cost of a Rick, it's pretty close!

Turn the damn drum machine down! Can't hear the subtleties in the basses.

Re: Direct recording of my two Rics
I have a GLJB, and I prefer the sound of the two Rics; a bit more pop and growl, with all of the bottom end one would want, at least to my ear.
"Dragon Attack" by Queen; nice piece!

Nice that you guys recognize Deacon's bassline. I always like his basslines.
I tried to lower the volume of the drums, but I failed
Maybe I'll give it another shot tomorrow.

Was that played finger style ? I didnt hear much edge/growl .
It's too early in the morning to talk about our relationship !

Re: Direct recording of my two Rics
Huh, I enjoyed the 78 most of all, with the finger style anyways. not a sound I would dial in, but the 78 seemed it would suit me better.
Re: Direct recording of my two Rics
My 79 never sounded like that 78, that's for sure. Maybe it really is me and not the bass
Do you know any more lines off of The Game? Those would be good to hear, too.
Re: Direct recording of my two Rics
Of the Ricks, I think the v63 sounded the best - I liked the completely open sound. The 78 with the neck PU cut sounded nice, too. Did you bypass the cap on the bridge PU, Phillip? My 75 has far more bottom, possibly because I still have the cap to (in some minds) neuter the bridge PU...
The J sounds nice too - I have a fretless - I liked the neck PU being the dominant sound. I suppose those are the stock American PU's in the J?

Re: Direct recording of my two Rics
I really liked the Geddy Lee jazz bass the best on those sound bites (all controls open 75%neck pick up) less natural distortion comming from pick ups nice smooth warm sound and tone, have a Geddy myself and use it often in the studio records very well.

I haven't bypassed the bridge PU on the '78.edski wrote:Of the Ricks, I think the v63 sounded the best - I liked the completely open sound. The 78 with the neck PU cut sounded nice, too. The PU's in the Geddy are stock;

(Indeed I played fingerstyle)

What a great thread...!
Of the Rics the 78 open was my fave.
Of the Jazz the neck at 75% was my fave, but I am a Jaco fan...!

Re: Direct recording of my two Rics
They all sounded good. I'd give the nod to the V63 full open both pups.

I liked the V63! It sounded a little bit more articulate.

"Just for the record", bass direct into Macbook recording software. So no effects, amp and stuff.
