Rickenbacker Acoustics A/B/C comparison

Post by rick_ovic »

The instant I played Dave Pascoe's Rickenbacker acoustic a couple of years ago, I fell in love with the sound and playability of these gorgeous instruments. I've since managed to find four of these special instruments, although one of them I've yet to play. It's being cared for by Dave until I collect it from his Rickenbacker vault later in the year. :D

Whenever someone asks me about the sound qualities of these guitars, it's alway difficult to describe in words. For some time now, I've been meaning to make some short video clips so that you can hear for yourselves. I was also inspired by JDog's A/B comparison tests of some of his Rickenbacker guitars and basses. The only clip on Youtube before now was the one taken at John William's lakehouse in South Carolina, on the day I acquired my first Rickenbacker acoustic from Cole Gaskin. In that clip, the sound is out of sync to the video and I'm wearing shorts, which I never, ever do. I don't have the right legs for shorts.

So, here's the A/B/C test on the three acoustics I have at home. Each one has it's own unique tone.

Didn't have the patience? Based on your schedule, I'm guessing it's more like didn't have the time. Get outside and let the sun do it's work!

Superb videos.

The sustain and projection on those guitars is amazing. I don't think I'll even look at my acoustic guitars again after hearing that. Actually, I think I'm gonna go and jump on one now to teach it a lesson for being rubbish.

I'm also impressed at how well you play, especially considering you were wearing sunglasses indoors, is that a sort of handicap to push yourself to the limit?

Brilliant.

Thanks for posting.

Rob, thanks for your comments. You nailed it when you described their "projection". That's the word I've been looking for for ages to describe these babies!

The sunglasses are on account of the twin 1000 watt halogen lights needed to light up my guitar room, late on a Sunday night. And I think they match my new haircut.

Darren, thanks for sharing. I only wish that I could only get my 730S to sound like yours. However, it's probably the guitarist's capability/limitations instead of the guitar's. :D

Regarding the haircut, I first thought that you had forgotten to tip the barber on your previous visit. Either that or you were going after that "Graham" look.

Well, that settles the question of what kind of 12 string acoustic guitar I want. Thanks for posting those vids.

Fascinating.

The deeper bass response is clearly audible with the latter two guitars.
