That's the way I always heard it, as triplets.

Hello all, i took the time to think a bit on CttE, time has been short so please excuse me for taking longer to answer.

I will create a new thread, as this one has a very different title. After I will come here to answer some questions I left unanswered.

Thank you everyone.

Oops! Of, course, you are both correct. 24 notes in an 8 beat phrase = triplets. That tab is from the Guitar Pro 5 program which has CTTE in it's entirety, but since anyone can create the tabs for this program, it is subject to the same errors as any tabs. They help you get close. It helps to group them in threes, as the modified jpg shows.

Whadaya say we discuss this in detail on Saturday? I'm 95% certain that I'll be at RIO, at least for the afternoon. Still haven't decided what to bring, since Jeff opened the choices to any and all. I do have a few axes that are slightly off-the-wall, so we'll see. I drive a Saturn coupe, so it will be limited to three. And if Pete and Miguel post a tab, between the five of us, we can work out a riff that is the most correct. I'm looking forward to you guys showing me a thing or two.

Thanks, Miguel, I'll check the new thread.

John, just a quick note to explain why on the CttE intro thread I stated that those are not triplets. The fact is that (again this is my own interpretation) the time signature of 12 by 8 has already the 3-part subdivision, so considering the time signature of 12 by 8, each note is a simple eighth. Triplet is when you put 3 notes in the same place where you would originally fit 2 notes, like for example 3 eighths instead of 2 on a, let's say 4 by 4 bar, which has the original subdivision pattern in powers of 2. In that case yes it would be a triplet and you would have to notate it like a triplet - with the little 3 and the "bracket". So if you opt for notating the same intro in 4 by 4, you will have to put triplets. It's not that wrong, but in my opinion not so correct. That's just part of the theory anyway. Cheers and have a nice weekend.

Perhaps not triplets in the strict sense but more as three note subdivisions of the phrasing.

That is also how I meant it. I have no music theory ability. I followed what Miguel was saying, but would not have known it on my own. I hear it as a group of three notes in a "statement", or probably better "phrase".

I'm with you, Scott. No theory here, but I at least followed what Miguel was saying.

I know some theory, but I wasn't thinking about 12/8 time signature... In 12/8, it is played straight, but will have, not a triplet feel, but a feel of every 3rd note getting an accent. So it all makes sense to me now and I see that Miguel has already moved us into "Looking Around" so I've got to go see what's been posted there. Miguel will end up improving all of our chops, I dare say. Between him and Pete, we may get the entire CS catalog tabbed out :D
