Here is one I actually saw, and emailed the seller and told him NOT TO SELL IT FOR THAT...it's worth 10 TIMES THAT.

Old Fender Bass Guitar - $250

This was my sons bass when he was younger (i'm guessing the mid 60's). Has been stored in our basement since then. I am asking $250 for it. I dont know much about it.

The accompanying picture was a Fiesta Red Jazz bass with pickup cover on and matching headstock. Obviously a '60's Jazz. He could have really gotten taken.

There is a local player here that bought a 73 4001mg in 73 and had played it ever since, his most loved possesion,and last year his wife sold it for 500 bucks after taking a lawywer to the band house to collect it for her divorce B.S. It really kills me when these people liquidate their ex or soon to be exes gear for pennies on the dollar just to be spiteful. I think the offending party should be held accountable for the fair market value of the items, regardless of what they sell it for.

Steve, I think that's really cool that you let that guy know that he was asking way too little for that bass.

Having spent a good many years behind a counter in music stores, a deal that's too good to be true over 90% of the time is stolen merchandise. I've seen lots of instruments people have brought in that they wanted way too little for and knew nothing about. It's funny how when you ask them for ID how quickly they either leave the store, or claim that they left it at home.

A company as big and resourceful as GC should really know what they have and what it's worth, so there's no question of ethics there. Often, places will blow out instruments that haven't sold because the space they take up could be used by stuff that is constantly selling.

The worst my ex ever did was cut the strings (with a wire cutter) on my '62 Gibson SG. I thought her head was gonna spin around and she was gonna announce she was the anti-christ.
Thank God my guitars and basses and I made it out of there in one piece!

Anyone remember the Tales of the Unexpected with John Gielgud posing as a vicar but he is really an antiques dealer?
He finds an extremely valuable rare wooden table at a farmhouse full of yokels.
He says its not much more than firewood and pays a pittance for it and says he will call back later with a bigger car to take it away.
When he comes back the farmers have chopped it up to save him the trouble!
What a pity the same thing didnt happen to this rip off merchant.
A bargain is one thing but out and out dishonesty is disgusting and I hope the money brings him nothing but trouble.

I guess I'm on the flipside of the popular view here. had I seen that Jazz bass for $250, I would have jumped on it. Never mentioning a word to the seller about it's value. Then I would have likely flipped it for 1000s never once thinking that the original seller got rooked. He sold it for the price he felt appropriate. The difference in the value to the cost is 100% irrelevant. For me as the buyer, I would be satisifed that I made a great business deal where no one lost anything in the transaction.

I feel if someone goes to the trouble of taking out an ad or putting up a "For Sale" for an instrument and they don't ask enough for it, then its fair game.

What bothers me are the namby-pamby "do-gooders" who see a good deal but tell the seller that it should sell for way more, lol! Thanks alot, bucko!

Hmm...yeah, in today's world its almost inexcusable to not have done research on the thing you're trying to sell. I'd buy and not look back.

I probably would have done the same thing. The guitars were for sale.
She had said the selling was $200 a shot so.....You only go around once in life.

I felt bad because I'm sure the guy was older and didn't have a clue. I figured he could have used the extra money.
BUT......the thought did cross my mind to saddle up and run down there...believe me.
