I have a 1975 Ric 420 in very good condition. FireGlo is the color. All original except the pickguard. Single, high gain pickup, 2 knob controls and a toggle switch. Neck is straight, action and sound are awesome. This little guitar can majorly rock the house or just as effectively pull off the early Beatles stuff. Even though the condition of the FireGlo finish is very very good I would prefer to have it PROFESSIONALLY painted JetGlo. Can anyone tell me with certainty if having this guitar painted will lower it's value. And what is it's approximate value as it is? Welcome to the forum, Dean. A vintage Rick from 1975 with the original Fireglo finish in nice condition? I'd leave it as is. You can alway pick up a Jetglo Rick.

In order to get an appraisal, post it under the Appraisals section, where the true "gurus of value" hang out.
Model 420s from that era are not very common, and originality would help the resale value. That said, it's your guitar, and if you want it Jetglo, then do it, as a professionally done refinish will not detract too much from the value.

Keep in mind that the 420 model is no longer made. Original ones in nice shape will only increase in value. You might try a post in the Wanted section of the forum - Perhaps someone can help you to find an vintage era pickguard for it.

Pickguardian sells pickguards for that model and can hook you up with one that looks just like the stock one, either white or a large choice of colors. You would be much better off selling it or getting a custom guard for it, rather than painting it. I would be very interested in swapping it, I have a lot of guitars, if your interested, PM me.

Thanks for the reply. I am always interested in entertaining possible trades. Let me know what you have that might be of equal value that you might want to trade. Does not have to be vintage. Since I am new to the forum and have not had any time to really familiarize with it's workings, is there a way to carry this on privately?

As one who owns two very altered rics, LEAVE IT ALONE. If you want a black Ric, buy one. I may someday paint my 330 JG but that's only because the person before me already defiled it. Never wreck a great instrument by trying to turn it into a good instrument, unless you know for a fact that when you pass on to the big Ric out in the sky that it's buried with you. In that case it's your soul mate, so do what ever you will.
