Compressors
Anyone have a recommendation for a compression unit to be used in live playing? I don't tote around a rackmount rig, so I thinking a stompbox with close-to-rackmount quality. Thanks.

the pedal with "close to rackmount quality" is the Retrospec Squeezebox.
But having said that, the REAL sound most people hear in their heads (from the records they remember) is a microphone on the cab compressed at the recording desk. NOT compressed BEFORE the amp.
Big difference.
So you might consider giving the compressor to the sound guy instead.

Try a Presonus Blue Max. Yes I know it is not a pedal but it is very reasonably priced, compact and used ac power plus it offers a lot more sound options than a pedal will. Just place it on top of your amp so it is handy to set the controls, you can plug your bass straight into the Blue Max and then go from it to your amp or you can place it in the effects loop.

toneman
There's two out now that are suppose to be excellent (according to a couple people who's ears I trust).
The Demeter Opto Compulator & the E-H Black Finger that my friend Peter Stroud says is totally transparent sounding. Peter plays with Sheryl Crow and has pretty damn good ears for tonality and things that work right.

I have the Analog Man's Comprossor and I am very pleased with it.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm
