My current family picture

Post by jakeox »

I get jealous when I see other people's family pictures, so I finally took all my basses out of their cases to take a couple group shots. It's kind of a lot of work! First, the four Rickenbackers I have right now, from left to right, 4001CS, July '73 MG, May '73 FG, and Shadow (not pictured: Dec. '72 JG soon to be another color):

Then I took a full group shot with all my basses. The one in the middle is a franken-Fender: Geddy Lee signature neck (whip-thin), custom Warmoth tiger's eye finish flame maple over chambered maple body (nice and light), Fender custom shop 60's pickups, black hardware. It kills. The two laying in front, soccer team photo style: the olympic white one is another franken-Fender, and the black one is an old MIM that I just picked up on the cheap. Not keeping both, but having fun doing a Thunderdome with them for now.

That's a lot of basses. Man, maybe I should sell a few. On the other hand, now that we have a second guitarist, my band should actually start gigging soon.

Thanks guys. Tony, I took that shot while the wife and kid were at the pool -- no need for them to see them all in one place! Although as I may have mentioned, we're in the process of getting a new kitchen. Sound familiar?

Fair enough, Woody, I meant I was jealous of the photos, not necessarily the collections (although there are plenty to be envious of here). I probably can't keep both '73s, so we'll see how that goes. But man, they look cool all laid out next to each other.

I know, having more than one 73 seems like such a waste ....... :) .

My situation exactly! Wifey will come in and look at the cases and ask, "How many do you have now"?, and if I pause for a bit, she'll guess a little on the low side, and I'l say "Yeah, that's it"!

On the other hand, I just about have her convinced that investing in guitars is better than money market CD's.

Yeah, never keep the whole collection in one place if you don't want someone to know how many you have. I keep the Shadow in the front hallway (my main rehearsal bass), and usually one or two others live there too, depending on if I need to clean up, restring, or otherwise work on any of them. Then there's two in my closet, along with my other instruments (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin, trumpet ... seriously, I need a music room) and pedals and strings and stuff. One lives under the futon in my son's room, and there's usually a fretless in the bedroom for easy practicing when my son's sleeping.

Then move them around a lot. Sometimes there's one in the hallway; sometimes four. There could be two or three in the closet. Sometimes there's one in the living room.

Also, buy and sell a lot of them. That constant flow of cases helps obscure how many are actually staying. That, and the fact that we're partway into a several month long move, has been my strategy. Having two homes for a couple months helps.

We're actually redoing the kitchen, two bathrooms, and lots of minor stuff in the new place. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find tasteful flamed maple cabinets.
