Guitar Tease by Fed Ex

Post by paologregorio »

I have a certain Rickenbacker delivery due today via Fed Ex.

The scene: my dining room
The time: noon-ish, lunchtime

As my friend Kathleen and I are in the dining room having lunch, we both hear the lumbering sound of a Fed Ex truck as it rounds the corner. The truck rolls to a stop in front of my house, squeaking slightly as the brake is applied, but then as I rise to get out of my chair and head to the door, the driver releases the brake, gives the engine a slight rev, pulls away from the house, and drives off around the corner. What a tease!!

The time is now four forty freakin' four P M, where's my guitar?!

I feel your pain, Paul. I recall a scheduled delivery date from UPS. The driver pulls up in front of my house. She rummages through the back of the truck. She keeps rummaging. I'm standing in front of my house. Eternity passes. She eventually comes back to the front of the truck with nothing, sits down at the drivers seat and pulls away.

Bright side...she came back about an hour later with my guitar. Never quite figured out what the deal was.

The guitar arrived!!

I was leaning back on my bed, ready to sip an ice cold Coke Zero, when I heard what sounded like a Fed Ex truck. Sure enough, slightly visible through my bedroom curtains was the bulk of a Fed Ex truck slowly rumbling past, complete with the boldly colored log emblazoned on the side of the truck...it goes PAST my house again, without stopping in front of my place, but I DID hear it stop at some point past the house. I rose from my bed, walked to the door, and looked about four houses down, across the street to where the truck was parked. From the far side of the truck, the driver appears holding a cardboard enclosed, rectangular guitar case shaped package. I wave to him, he nods in acknowledgement, and walks over. "You could have parked here if you'd wanted to. I feel bad that you walked so far". He chuckled, as he hadn't quite known the location of the house number, hence the walk. I asked the driver if he’d come by earlier, explaining what had happened at lunch, but he said that it wasn’t him. We took care of the paperwork, he handed me the package, and I walked in to unwrap my Rick.

The guitar is gorgeous. It's the nicest WB I own, and the newest. I did a side by side comparison with my other two, and the finish and proportions are really something. It has a significantly smaller soundhole than my `84 AZ. The cutaway horns are much sharper, which I like, and the bottom horn is longer. The body is also slightly larger, and the guitar is lighter overall, of course. Compared with my `91 MG WB, the horns are again, pointier, and slightly longer. The body sizes are closer, possibly the same, and the headstock on the new `97 is slighlty smaller than on the `91 MG WB.

Great guitar. It's freakin' beautiful. It makes me wish I had the $ to buy the TUR V64/12.

All right Paulo! Let's see them pics. Have fun with that turquoise, it has lots of different personalities with different lights.

Made me think of the Eddie Murphy bit with the Ice Cream truck. "Watch how fast I can make this little Mother ****er run!"

Guy saw that you were expecting a guitar sized package and kept slowing in front of your house doing circles torturing you.

Grats in the new Gitter! Pics por favor.

I'll take some today, along with some comparison shots, but it's going to be hard to top the pics Jason took of the guitar:

Congratulations. My deliveries always come when I'm at work, so I open up the tracking page and reload it every half hour or so. Good call on the Coke Zero too -- it's Diet Coke for men.
