You bring up a great point Robert - When I notice that a band is using a Rick, i'll always see what they sound like, just out of curiousity. Sometimes it's turned out that the band becomes one of my favorites (The Jam jumps to mind), other times I simply haven't liked 'em very much.

Regarding JPJ, we can agree to disagree. But I will say that his tone and playing on Led Zeppelin II has influenced me greatly.

Wow, you go away for 5 minutes and what happens? Glad to see it's all been ironed out!

Personally I really like Manowar's first few albums, certainly up to and including Fighting the World. I've also met the original band a couple of times and they were pretty cool guys who didn't take themselves as seriously as you'd expect. The funniest thing was the first time I saw them I went expecting them to be hilariously bad, and came away thinking it was the most enjoyable concert I'd seen up to that point. It was FUN, and sometimes it's easy to forget that aspect of music.

In response to some questions about playing and gear I sent him all those years ago (1984...ouch), Joey DeMaio sent me a personalized audio tape addressing everything I'd asked; I was mightily impressed. He was extremely friendly and forthcoming when I met him too, far more so than some other more notable bassists I could (but won't) mention, and is an extremely good bassist technically. But bear in mind I also love Rush, the Who and Deep Purple. As, I'm sure, do Manowar....Joey was nothing but praiseworthy about both Lemmy (for being utterly unique and a great guy) and Entwistle (for being such an originator). And indeed about Stanley and Jaco...

Oh, and I believe they were the loudest band ONSTAGE.......they've never been that loud live IMO. The loudest band I've seen on a decent sized stage were Motorhead on the Ace of Spades and Iron Fist tours....the loudest band I've seen fullstop were a band called Dragster who played at a Motorheadbangers (M/head fanclub) do. They were so loud you almost couldn't hear them, your ears just shut down completely!

Let's face it, how many of us played "Knights" when we were boys? I'm sure there's a lot of us who endulged into that fantasy of being a Warrior.

A band like Manowar works on that fantasy, nothing too serious just having fun and dressing up like Warriors, nothing wrong with that it's just fun.

As for them being loud, God, when I saw them I wore earplugs and even they couldn't prevent my ears from ringing after the concert had ended.

Kathy Velentine was the bassist for the Go-Go's. While obviously not a giant among bassists, I thought her lines were just right for the song. Get Up and Go and How Much more were fun songs to play back in the day with really up and poppy riffs to them.

KV was the Go-Go's bassist but remember too that she was a guitarist before she joined the band, as well as in her subsequent band, "The Delphines". That being said, I agree completely with your opinion regarding her playing bass parts that were just right for their songs-fun, with really poppy riffs. They definitely stick in my head!

I try to do the same sort of thing when I play bass, but in my case, I played bass for a couple of years before I ever picked up a guitar, but I've been playing guitar a lot longer than I ever played bass, though I still enjoy picking one up and playing along.

It's all a matter of perspective. personally the 80s were the greatest decade for metal (sans the silly hair bands). like every genre in every decade, there is cheese and manowar certainly served up their fair share of it. but their debut album is a perfect example of good metal.

sure the videos were stupid, everyone's videos in that era were stupid.

i guess i should go back into the beatles forum and slag mccartney some more.

Oh yeah, Kathy Valentine's bass line in "Head over Heels" rocks! Just my opinion...

That's one I had in mind when I said that her bass lines stick in my head.
