Strings spacing on 4003
are the E and G string on the 4003 supposed to be very close to the edge of the fret where it starts to angle.
in other words the g and E string seem very close to the edge and sometimes it will actually slip off the edge of the fretboard...
there seems to be an 1/8 of an inch where the string is before the end of the freboard on most other basses i have seem/played
someone told me this may be a nut issue...

Christopher: Why not send in a photo of your 4003 at the nut.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

I had one like that, with mine it was that the saddle had been cut too close to the edge on the g string, it would slip off the edge, very agravating, I would check the saddles before the nut, if the nut is correct it should be the same distance from the edge all the way to the end of the neck. On one old 4001 they put the tailpiece on slightly off centered and compensated by cutting all the saddles off to one side. haha! But it works and plays ands sounds fine, can't argue with that.

jeff,
i just got through looking at a majority of the pictures of all the ric basses in the "post a pic of your ric" thread
the way they all look in those photos mine is the same, everybodys E and G strings look dangerously close to the edge.
wasnt that a yes album?
was the name of that album "close to the edge" about ric`s?
lol

I have three 4001's here with me in Lima and all are about as you have descibed 1/8 of an inch from the edge of the neck, the nuts are identical in two of them and they are a little different in distance from the edge because of the way the saddles were cut. But none of them are too close.
If the nut is cut very close to the edge you need a new one, if not it is the saddles which I still think is more the likely culprit. The string should be the same distance from the edge of the neck all the way from the nut to the last fret. If it is and it is too close to the edge it is the nut, if it gets closer and closer to the edge of the neck as you go down the neck from the nut, it is the saddle. What year is your bass anyway? Thre early nineties basses seem to have had slightly more narrow necks than either earlier or later 4003's. A picture would be nice though.

lol, jeff......
bob, i saw your earlier post regarding the saddles. actually its the other way around than you described, closer near the nut than the saddle, but not much.
i have never slipped off while playing with the band and no one else has ever commented on itwho has tried my bass.
from all the pic`s i think mine is fine,,,
thanks for the replies
